midi recording question

Hi Everyone
I'm trying to record 2 separate midi sources simultaneously onto 2 separate tracks. I'm using n-track and also have a cakewalk sonar demo that I've been trying to do this on. The problem is I can only enable one midi track at a time for recording. I want to record a piano part on my Roland Juno 2, at the same time my friend is playing/recording on a drum kat (using a Roland R70 drum machine for a sound module). I'm also using a midiman 2X2 interface, and a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card with a Yamaha XG WaveForce daughterboard. So in a nutshell, how do I record 2 midi instruments, onto 2 different sequencing tracks at the same time? I'm fairly new at midi, so I hope one you experts can give me a hand. Are you positive you cant enable 2 tracks at once? Try setting the second track to recieve on the second midi port then enable it to record. Some software wont enable the track to record until you give it a valid input.

If you have to do it on one track then set the track to recieve on all midi channels (OMNI) then you can each play on a different midi channel and it should be able to record both inputs onto one track. Afterwards you would have to filter out the other part and copy it to it's own track.

You may run into a problem with merging the midi signals if it won't accept midi from both ports at the same time on one track.

Still working on it, but no cigar. I am able to "arm" both tracks for recording, but, only the highlighted Track # gets recorded. On top of that, when I click on track #1, both drum & keyboard controllers play piano sounds, and when I click on track #2, both controllers play percussion sounds, I can't get the 2 controllers to play their respected sounds at the same time. I guess I should solve that problem first, before trying to record.
Any ideas? Again, my goal is for me & my drummer to record separate drum & keyboard parts, on 2 separate tracks, in real time, at the same time. This is a great board, I'd been lurking for awhile, reading posts and doing searches, and have learned alot from you guys, but I just can't get this one thru my thick skull. Thanks again, Tom
 
Unless anybody out there knows some tricks it sounds like you need better software. I'm surprised the Sonar demo won't do it.
 
In Cake9 (Sonar should be the same or nearly) in the track view, double click the source, it will open up a dialog box. near the top, the source will (default) be listed as "midi omni" - click the drop-down arrow, choose a fixed source such as "Midi port 1, track 2" - these choices will vary depending on your hardware and whether it's been installed and "profiled" correctly by Sonar. Do this for each input you'll be using.

Cake/Sonar defaults to making its own decisions on what connects to what, and usually this works fine. For "live" multitracking, it doesn't work right and you have to bypass the automatic (Midi Omni) feature.

For the part of getting Sonar to actually record separately, if the above doesn't help unfortunately I can't be of much help right now. The only machine I have availiable for the next few months is a laptop with built-in hardware, which sucks. My REAL stuff is all in dis-contiguous piles due to a complete re-do (mix desk, wall changes, moving to 5.1 surround, new mixer, new DAW, yadda yadda... I tried on my laptop to highlight multiple tracks and it won't do it. However, the help file claims you can, it just isn't very helpful about HOW you do it.

If you can't find the HOW on Cake's site under FAQ's, email either their tech support or Craig Anderton direct. He's deep into Sonar and could definitely advise you... Steve
