Hello, I am a guitar player who just expanded his home studio to include a little 4-track digital recorder. I currently have a little zoom drum machine that I use. Not being a drummer I basically have to program most of my drum lines in step mode which can take forever.

I have been looking at MIDI possibilities lately. I hear it is possible to use a program like cakewalk or cubase to setup instruments (so I assume drum kits) in a more tablature/sheet music type view.

Is this possible? What I am envisioning is programming in drum lines in a program and being able to use features like cut and paste etc. to save time.

Am I looking in the right direction or is there a better way, besides meeting a drummer :-)

Software sequencers make drum programming easier. That being said, a decent sequenced drum line *always* takes time to create.

There are a number of software based drum packages that can work well. One combination is to use a program like Band in the Box to create MIDI drum tracks on a song by song basis. Then use the MIDI output to drive a drum machine with better drum sounds (sampled for example), to produce a final WAV result which can be recorded.

I use Home Studio 2004.... this has a sequencer as part of the program. That and my Alesis SR-16 and I'm on my way..... The thing is that no matter what the drum device is ... it still takes time to input the information..... and I learned you need to understand time and how it all works to actually be creative with it but that's just me. http://www.cakewalk.com/forum/tt.asp?forumid=16
