hi, folks. i use emagic's sound diver 3.04 to manage and edit my yamaha w7 and my line6 pod. so far i've been unsuccesfull using both at the same time. the w7 has a midi in, out, and thru, and the pod has just midi in and out. what order should i have these in and which ports do i need to use to get my computer to see them both at the same time? thanks in advance,

Seems that PC MIDI Out -> Yamaha MIDI In ->Yamaha MIDI Thru -> POD MIDI In should get you to communicate to them, but to have them both communicate back I think you need two MIDI inputs on the computer, or a MIDI merger to take merge the POD's MIDI Out and the Yamaha's MIDI Out to one MIDI stream.

thanks, that was quick! I had a feeling you'd be the one to respond! wouldn't the configuration you mentioned, with the addition of POD midi out to PC midi in complete the chain? I'm sure I can do this, but I just want to make sure I'm passing the correct info through the devices. If I can just get SoundDiver to see both devices, I should be able to edit either of them. I'll experiment a bit more. There are several of these universal midi editors out there, and it seems to me that for the money, you should be able to string up all your midi devices and leave 'em that way, editing any device at any time. At least I hope so.

The POD output won't pass on stuff from the Yamaha back to the computer... or will it? Not sure about that. I think only stuff that is initiated on the POD to send MIDI data will send stuff out the port; messages from the Yamaha won't be echoed thru, I don't believe...

The other limitation is, you have only 16 tracks for both the Yamaha and the POD to use. A 2x2 interface would really make life easier.

I believe the POD midi out can be configured internally as an out or thru. I would try hooking them up individually and seeing what you can get to work first.

Remember each device will need to be on a seperate midi channel to have individual control over them. You will also need to tell Soundiver what channels they are on.

I'm good to go, here. I have it like this: PC MIDI out to W7 MIDI in; W7 MIDI thru to POD MIDI in; POD MIDI out to PC MIDI in. I have both devices set to channel 1. Now while I'm messing around in SoundDiver, I can click the POD icon, edit as many sounds as I need, and store them. Then in the View menu, I can select Next Device, which brings up the W7 icon and all it's sounds/banks. I can double-click one of the voice names, which opens the editor. From there I can edit and store voices in the W7 without having to do a bunch of cable re-routing. The downside is that both devices have to be on to keep the signal flowing full-circle. Small price to pay for on-screen editing, though! Thanks for your input, guys!!
