i am looking to do some home recordings in my makeshift basement studio. i am a guitar/strings player. I am interested in mainly recording and sequencing via midi but also would like to be able to use the keyboard for general use and practice. i know that i wanna get 88 notes. and i want it to feel somewhat like a piano or keyboard. what would fit my needs? would it be best to get a 88 note midi controller such as the MAudio keystation 88 note midi controller or a digital piano like the MAudio Pro 88 Stage Piano which double as a midi controller? or should i shell out some bucks and get a synthesizer like a Roland Fantom-X8 88-Key Sampling Workstation?

am i right to assume that all of these i mentioned will perfrom the basic function of a midi controller?

Depends what direction you are going in. If your putting together a computer based DAW, than a workstaion would be redundant. Most (if not all) keyboards today will have midi on them so just about anything will act as a midi controller.

So I guess you have to ask yourself, do you want instant sounds from an keyboard or invest in the softsynths and use a controller (or do both)

juss a lil help

im new to this as well but it all depends on your budget
i have a korg 49key controller that my key buddies love then i have an maudio controller as well
i use them for computer recording
its actually about the same as if you were to buy a keyboard but it saves money when you go to buy another keyboard, you can just buy a rack or buy two racks and one controller and you have two keyboards for less than you would by buying both boards and if youre using it with a computer it also saves space another thing is if you just want sounds i would buy a controller and a rack not a whole board because you may not utilize all of the functions of a keyboard

so am i correct to assume that a "rack", would be an external (to computer) piece of hardware (midi?) that acts like a sound bank for the controller? from what i have seen they call these modules?

my other questions:
instead of using a module can i use software/pc/soundcard to get sounds for the controller?

say i buy an inexpensive keyboard, (casio etc)- and it has midi can i use that as a controller?
