Hi,
I'm somewhat new to home recording i'm running cubase VST(project pack) into a PC. 20-bit audio card with 2in/2outs.I am using an external mixer(behringer) and i have my analog instruments running through there.I Have a Korg-X3 workstation that i would like to hook up.How would i go about doing that via midi do i need additional hardware, i.e. an interface?

Thanks!

Arc76,

With most PC's you can get away with using a $20 cable to connect a MIDI device to your soundcard, but you lose your joystick port in the process (not all soundcard joystick ports will talk to a MIDI device over such a cable.)

An other option for many people now that USB is so common is a device like I use, the Midiman Midiport2x2, which connects to my PC via USB, and provides me with two pair of standard MIDI in/outs.

I'm not sure if I'm telling you anything new, but many people who are new to MIDI don't understand that it is really quite different from an audio signal -- to try to keep it simple, the only devices that can "play" MIDI data have a software or hardware "tone generator". This is a specialized device, so if I *am* telling you something new you should probably do some research on MIDI before you make any choices... Here is a MIDI resource page I found in a Google search:

Ditto! I use the Midiman MidisportUSB 2x2 and it's a great solution. Dead easy to install (plug it in and it works.)

You might also want to look through the Hal Leonard books; I think they just came out with one that explains MIDI from end-to-end.

There should be a MIDI type pin on your sound card to receive the MIDI cable. Connect directly to that from the keyboard. Sometimes the connection is a mini (smaller) in that case you need an adapter for your cable.
