Midi and Vsti issue

I am a noob to reaper, and midi in general. What I'm hoping to achieve is to get a midi file into reaper and then use the vsti interface to change the sound. This seems to be the most likely way to get it to work for me since I don't have a midi controller.

So far I've managed to create the midi file and get it to a track in reaper, but have been unable to manipulate the sound after that. I've been attempting to use the Proteus VX synth plugin since it has a lot of features, but I can't get it to do anything to the track once its created in Reaper.

My goal here is to take some tunes I've recorded and add some synth overdubs for ambience and color. Previously I've just recorded straight into reaper and audacity so this midi thing has me all confused. Is what I'm trying to achieve possible? Am I going about it the wrong way? Is there a better way to do this? Any help or pointers are always appreciated, thanks.

Have you added the plugin onto the midi track?

also you may need to set the midi channel that the plugin receives.
