Okay I want to buy a microphone only for vocals but I'm on a budget I have about $250.00, and I've narrowed it down to the Akg perception 220 or the rode nt1-a which I've heard are good mics for the price so which one should i get? I'm recording r&b,vocal harmonies, and Rap. There's one thing i've heard about the rode nt1-a mic that it's a great mic,but that it's weight is extremely light does that make a difference on the quality of the mic? thx for the help.

Either one of those microphones would be good as a starter up type but maybe you should save just a little bit more money and get something like a Shure SM7b or a EV RE50 and never look back!

Don't buy an rode-nt1a.

At first it'll sound really good because you've never heard this huge high end on a microphone before compared to an average dynamic.

A few months later you absolutely hate the high end hype and the sibillance.

( Thats my 2 cence for its use on vocals anyway, but what do i know, it was used in the last 30 seconds to mars album as is my understanding, and the vocals on that sound amazing )

I have too many mics.
Among them is an AKG Perception 100. (I'm the first owner) and an AKG Perception 200. Bought the 200 a few weeks ago for cheap because it didn't have a spider mount. I then bought a spider mount so it's now complete. The mic looks a little worn but sounds great. "Warm".
Anyway, I got an AKG C3000 at the same time as the 200 and am keeping that one for live vocals.
If you want either of those for way under your budget, PM me or just reply to me on this thread.

I have a few mics that I use and recommend for vocals: an old beyer 500 ribbon - you can probably find one of these uses.....a shure sm7.......and a pair of shure sm58's that have had tab funkenwerk transformers installed by mercenary audio Mercenary Audio - AMI TAB-Funkenwerk (TAB V-78 Mic Pre, TAB V-71 DI, Oliver Archut, TAB FAQ) ......I am NOT a fan of sm57's or sm58's for recording, but the tab funkenwerk transformers really wake them up!

In which way? I know in a good way but more specific.

...in your price range, and without a beefier mic pre (which is necessary, IMHO, for the SM7 and ribbon suggestions) I'd say take look at the revised MXL 2003A...none of the harsh high-end you might experience with the Rode NT1A...you can listen here:

...and that will leave you with about $100 leftover to put towards a better mic pre down the road...the MXL 2003A is a very decent vocal mic for cheap...you'll be surprised by the sound quality...

...or, save up another $100 and go for the gusto!:

If its a vocal mic just for you, you should try really hard to test a couple mics. vocal>mic pairings can be so unpredictable and it would be a shame for you to spend a lot of money on a mic that does not suit your voice. For some singers I record, my $100 mics beat our my $2000 mics.
