A band is coming in Thursday that wants to do a demo type thing where they play all there stuff live. So my question is should i mic the pa system or just have a mic in front of him that goes straight into the recorder. And if so what kind of mic should i use for in front of him, im thinking a dynamic like a 58, i was thinking no condenser because it will pick up too much of the instruments.

Do you have to record everything live?

Can you just record the instruments and then record the vocals?

If you have to do it all at once why not give everyone headphones and bypass the PA?

Also try to seperate the other instruments from each other as much as possible. This can be done by putting dividers up or pointing the amps the other way.

Ya i will definitely use the dividers. I dont have the option of giving them all headphones because i havent had the chance to get a headphone amp yet.

Can you record all the instruments first and then record the vocals after?

Other than bleedover, you might record it live... and overdub the vocal tracks.

Some young bands have a hard time dealing with their songs with no vocals... they get lost.
