My band has just started to get in to this recording thing, and from what I've read, micing guitar amps generally seems to be a try-and-see type thing. I've been using a SM57 primarily and I have a AT3035 on the way. I've found that I like the 57 about 6 inches from the grill at a slight angle pointed directly at the cone, but it still seems to sound a bit flat. To my amateur ears, moving it closer loses the guitar dynamics, and moving it farther loses clarity. I was just wondering if there are any general guidlines/rule of thumb that would help the experimentation process.

Thanks.

You could try angling the mic towards the edge of the speaker, or anywhere in between.

"Where's the best place to put a camera to photograph a mountain?"

Same kind of question, same kind of answer!
