Micing a Vibe

Hi I wrote and recorded a nice easy latin jazz piece and a friend
has consented to play a vibrophone on it for me for a solo,
can anyone give me the best way to mic this instrument,
I will be recording it in a university band room, the mics I have are not great but they are 4 sm57s, some small diameter Octavia
condensers, some Marshall v65? (Im not home so Im going off of memory) And a large diameter Shure condenser mic,
please tell me what is best aproach to doing this?

Great Shades of Lionel Hampton or Red Norvo or many others I'm sure. Vibes are great.

Don't know what gear you're using to record; however, since the vibes are struck with mallets, firm, medium, or soft [I'm guessing at these titles] I don't think you'll have much trouble getting a good signal.

I'd try a couple of configurations and see what the test run shows on your meters.

Use the Oktavas, above the vibes (try slightly in front or in back to see whcih sounds better in that particular room). Either spaced stereo pair about 3-4 feet away from the vibes and about 6 feet apart, or a coincident pair, again 3-4 feet away.
