One of my friends has just bought a Randall Vmax Full Stack. Im about to record his band. I was wondering if it would sound better Micing the Cabinet w/ an SM 57 or should I use the cabinet simulator circuit on the back of the Head?

Try both and see what you like better. Or use both at the same time.

few things:

1. beware of phase issues if you use both at the same time.
2. if you've only got a 57, you'll pry want to close mic it, no need for the FULL stack, just a halfstack.
3. make sure you have enough volume to get cabinet involement and speaker excursion if you mic it up. the 57 adds a bit of natural compression, too(it's cool).
4. listen for the best speaker in both cabs, mic that one.
5. forget everything I just said and try it your way.

Ha....... well then I guess no one has tried it huh?
