Alright, so I just got a new Christmas package of cool recording goodies from some relatives. Problem is, I can't see how to plug them up to my computer. I received a condenser mic, which I know to plug in to my new mixer, a xenyx 802 (phantom power is on). Now, I've had a Line 6 Toneport UX1 for a good while, which I connect to my computer via USB cable. There is another output which the Line 6 company recommends to hook up to the computer, but it's a 1/4" output and I don't know how to connect that to my laptop.

Here comes the good part. How do I connect my mixer to my toneport to the computer and have everything be recorded on my software?

Here's your answer

I used to do just this with entire drum setups and what not =)

Firstly, if you have the Toneport UX1 or UX2...actually, regardless of which toneport you have, you're going to need to go to your local guitar store or radio shack (believe it or not, radio shack is the better bet in your case) and obtain an RCA (male) to 1/4" (also male). Take the RCA, plug it into the tape output on the mixer, then plug the other end into the 1/4" input on the toneport. Ghetto-rigged, yeah, but it'll work. If you have the guitar-only toneport, I guess just set your preamp to a clean preamp, probably the tube amp setting with no cabinet modulation and very low gain, simply so it won't color your sound from the mic too much. If you have one with a mic input, excellent. Just set your preamp as a mic one with barely any EQ or compression, though I guess you can do pretty much whatever you want to to slightly color it up a bit.

Okay, so after I typed all that, I realized that you said you had the UX1. Geez, I'm retarded . Okay...plug it into the GUITAR input. Yes, there are mono inputs in the back of the toneport, and you could go main out left and right into those, respectively, BUT because this is USB, multiple inputs will only record onto one track, and unless you have your preferences messed with on your software, it'll only record onto one track...not fun. So run the RCA tape output on the mixer, set your fader levels on the mixer, EQ maybe, then your tape output level, then your preamp level on the Gearbox program, THEN you can record. Just make sure you arm the track! haha.

If you need any more help, just ask.

I record two tracks simultaneously just fine on my Toneport UX1. I am borrowing a DMP3, and I just run the outputs into the line inputs on the Toneport. You have to set the inputs in Gearbox as the Line 1 and 2, and it works great. Just make sure all your ins/outs are set properly in Gearbox and your DAW.

Yeah, you can record two mono tracks simultaneously, but they'll only show up as one stereo track in your DAW. I always just found plugin' into the guitar jack was easiest with a 1/4" TRS to RCA cable. I upgraded to a Firepod and Sonar PE 6, so all of my multi-tracking problems have been solved :D

Hmm, I really don't know. I record two different mono tracks. I have used Reaper, Garageband, and Logic 8 and it has worked great. Maybe newer drivers or something have enabled this...

Not trying to trump your statement Carny1122, but I have had no problems at all.

I'll bet my problem was Cakewalk 2.2 hahaha....ohhh boy, the good old days...

I got mine off of Musicians Friend literally a week after it was released..I think it was around $125 or so....so yours probably has newer drivers. My old recording computer hasn't been hooked up to the internet since about 2000, too, so any updates for my UX1 never came about. Oh well, it usually worked fine. I just wish I could have done 2 mono tracks, too. :(
