What are some good but not too expensive mic stands?

Right now I got some cheep little tripod boom stands but they aren't all that stable. We have alot of tripod boom stands at work that are better than I have but I've seen them fall over too many times to put anything other than a 57 or 58 on them(I work for a live audio company).

What are the most stable mic stands out their that don't cost more than say $75?

Has any one ever built their own mic stand?

"On Stage" stands from "Daddy's Junkie Whatsits" (also available from "Musicians Fiend" etc. etc.) for less than $30. Perfectly OK for 57s, 58s and others which can stand being dropped. I use them all the time for live gigs.

Studio or live, where you don't want to drop the mics - I use Atlas Soundoliers - expensive, but built like the proverbial "brick shyte-house", and also has beautiful plumage to boot...

I also have a couple of the large booms from Atlas - they have wheels on the bases of the stands, and so can be easily moved - they were about $150, but they're very flexible, and heavy enough to hold a pair of GT MD 6TMs set up for M/S at about 8 feet without falling over.

I also have a couple of the Beyer ST532 stands which extend from 3' to about 15' and are strong enough to carry a pair of large-diaphragm mics.

Hope this helps -
