i have a few on stage stands brand boom stands. i got them when sam ash was having the 50% off accessories deal, so i got 4 for $50. they are just about useless for precise control since they end up sagging an inch or two once you tighten them.. but for throwing up quick overheads i can't complain.

Check out Tama. Nice heavy hardware.

Another vote for Tama.

I bought a dozen On-Stage mic stands, and the bag has more value than the stands. The clutches are flimsy, and the user eventually horses the clutch down so tight that it strips out. The riser tubes bend easily, and the mechanism is flaky.

A big thumbs down for On-Stage.

I acquired a Tama short stand for kick drum from eBay by good fortune. Nobody was looking when the auction closed, so I got it for $9. The Tama are built like tanks. Clutches are excellent and do not have to be horsed down to hold the boom angle.

K&R (?) the German made stands are pro grade also. I don't own one, but the pro sound guys swear by them. Sturdy and reliable.

Since we're naming names, KMD was an example of one that didn't quite get it for me. Like the Tama they're stout enough but the clutch isn't. And the legs do that floppy thing that makes trying to pack and arm load out -like that bit where the guy is trying to pick up too many balls at the same time..?
(Maybe they've changed them since then.)
