Hey guys i need some advice on choosing mic pre's. I have a budget of about 300 dollars. I'm looking for a minimal of 2 mic pre's. Iv'e heard Jomeek and Digimax are very nice for the money and so is FVR or FR or something like that. What else is out there? (basically looking to record vox, guitar, bass with these pre's.)

thanks

ART Pro MPA $340 @ 8thstret

M-Audio DMP-3

2 SP VTB-1 (the price is supposed to be coming down soon)

Used Mackie 1202 VLZ

How are the Pre's on the DMP3 compared to the Mackie? I'm planning on bypassing getting a mixer all together and just getting stand alone preamps.

Is there something that costs a little more but is better? 250-350 US about. 400 is pushing it.

Sorry i don't mean to hijack this thread, i think this is information you want as well.

IMHO mackie is tons better than the maudio pre's. YOu can literally throw anything at the mackie and get a good enough sound. Any lower to mid priced pre's are going to be a little more "picky" if you will. But if you find something that gives you the sound you want, then go for it.

I'm looking to get a DIgimax LT (I want/need the A/D conversion as much as the pre's) but you aint going to find it for $300. The flexability afforded my a mixer is more than worth the money, especially if you are recording multiple instruments with multiple musicians at once. (welll that almost goes without saying.. lol)

Yea but i wouldn't use the mixer, just the preamps. No sense in paying 700 canadian for 4 channels of mackie pre's when some of the money is just going into the mixing board part i won't use. I would only use it for controlling the volume of monitoring speakers and headphones.

And i'm planning on getting some passive monitors and an amp to do the headphone/volume stuff.

Ive used the 1202 for quite a few months, i rented it 3 times, for a month at a time. It was great, but i just bypassed the eq and everything from the sends, and just used the preamps. And i've been told the DMP3 is on par with the mackie preamps, if not better. But who knows? If you add up the price of 2 dmp3's, it's approximatly the same price as a new mackie 1202. That way you have 4 preamps either way, but with the mackie you get the mixing board functions as well. BUT the dmp3 i think has more control over the preamps functions, considering that's all it does. I think it has the hi gain and low gain settings as well, which act as a sort of virtual pad.

But hey who knows. I was wanting to get maybe the DMP3 or some other outboard preamps, and have them running into my sound card, and use a sepearte amp and passive speakers. But if i got a mackie i'd just get actives and control the volume from the mixing board.

Anyone else have an opinion on the DMP3 pre's versus the Mackie Pre's? What are some other good stand alone pre's around the same price range that would be better than the mackie or dmp3?

Yamaha MLA7 is an 8 channel arround that price and I think it is sonicaly better than both those.

What do you think would work well for this signal chain?

For instruments and male vocals. I think i'll get a pair of those marshal mxl603s for instruments, and either a b1 one or c1 for vocals, BUT i'm open to other suggestions.

I'd be getting i think a Delta 44. And i don't really need a mixing board, just the preamps, but economically the mackie 1202 is a pretty good deal for 4 preamps. But i've also been thinking of the DMP3.

So which combination of mic/preamp do you think would suit this chain best? I'm open to suggestions for any other preamps or microphones.

What about the AT 4040?

I'm going to break the cardinal rule and say the "B" word, but I just got a Behringer T1953 ultragain and from what I have been able to tell from it, it sounds great.

Got mine for $160 US. Also picked up an ART dual MP and also a great addition to my setup. I think the ART is priced around $299 to $350 depending on where you look. I got mine used.

Anyway..just my two cents.

God Bless!

Axe Music distributed Line Audio Design stuff, and they make a nice preamp called DP-1. It costs about $250 in Sweden, it may be more expensive in the US, I wouldn't know. Call Axe Music and aks, I mean ask.

It's very clear and transparent, and the only thing it doesn't have are phaseshift buttons. But then again, you can get a cable that does that. :)

It's clarity makes it less excellent on vocals, where you often want that high-end 'tube' roloff. This is fixable by using an SM57 for vocals instead. :) On the other hand, it sounds great on acoustic guitars and bass.

I bought a DMP3 to rescue myself from "pre-amp hell". I can't comment on the rest, but I'm in heaven now!

Bless this forum.

You're all forgiven for all of your sins.

Now that you have a clean slate go stir up some shit!

I also bought a DMP3 and use it with a Shure KSM27 and I'm VERY happy with the results I'm getting into my Korg D1600. Now I'm waiting for the new Joe Meek MQ3's to come on the market and I will get one of them for "color" and then I'll stop (for a while
