Has anyone used Behringer's Tube Ultragain Mic Preamp? I have a Shure Ksm-32 Mic Going Into Roland 1880. Am trying to get a little more punch into mostly vocals. Thanks

I own a Behringer Tube Ultragain 1953 and I have to say for 200 bucks its a steal. Its not the best mic preamp in the world but it sounds much better then any of the ART or Presonus stuff in that price range. I have found it to work better in some situations then others. Rumor has it if you change the tubes for much better ones(I will be trying that with some old GE tubes I got my hands on this weekend) it will improve the the sound of the unit.

Get it at Guitar Center or one of the mailorder websites that give you 30 days to return it if you don't like it.

Then you might want to look at a good compressor. Adding punch isn't the job of a preamp.

The GE tube were not that hot, try to find mullard or telefunken or Rca, to improve the sound of your pre. And if you have 2 tubes to replace, try to get matched ones.

A good rule of thumb on old tubes, get the NOS (new old stock) and seek out the brands that Hi Fi audiophiles shop for.

I have to agree with Gidge that a Joe Meek preamp is a hell of better preamp than any Behringer product.

as for the GE tubes I bought a box of 6 at a yard sale for 5 bucks. How could you go wrong? The guy who sold them to me said they were never used and they are over 20 years old. If i got my hands on some Mullard or Telefunken tubes I highly doubt I would use them in a $200 preamp cause that would seam like a waste to me. Would you agree?

Not putting them in anything is a bigger waste. what I find myself doing sometimes is looking at old radios at some of the antique dealers and lifting the 12ax7 tubes, Ive found some RCA and Tung Sol tubes that way. I would call some old TV repair places and tell them that you like to fix old radios and get them to give you tubes. You would be suprised at how some of the older places operate.

Now Tele funkens and Mullard tube wont be at these shops but if you are lucky you may get some RCAs.

I will try that out then. thanks for the tip darrin_h2000
