does anyone know where I can find a tube (or equal quality) 8channel rackmount mic preamp with XLR and 1/4 plugs in the front? or would I have to build it myself?

shit...I don't know if 1/4 is the right term...ummm, guitar cable jacks...1/2 maybe?...anyway, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about

I have the TLAudio 5001 tube preamps. Only four in 2u rackspace but great quality. If you're not in europe they are sold as HHB units but I don't know the typenumber.

Damn, they have no connections on the front. Only XLR input, and XLR and jack output.

Mayby a little custom patchbay in the rack?

I'm not sure if there are any reasonably priced boxes with the feature set you are looking for. Most mic pres have their xlr connections on the back, but as Downside suggested, you can always bring the connections to the front using a patchbay, or just a snake with labelled ends.

While many mic pres have DI (1/4" instrument) jacks on the front, I don't know if any of the 8 channel ones do. At least in the "inexpensive" range.

hrmmmm, yesh, those are good suggestions, I had considered the pactchbay, but I wanted to find out if any preamps had the options in the front so I wouldn't have to... also, I'll be sending these channels into an analog 8track with no xlr inputs!, so do these preamps have 1/4 instrument cable outs? anyway, thanks a lot for your replies.

You can make or buy cables with any types of connectorts you need. In your case you would want XLR-male to TRS in order to connect a preamp with xlr outputs to your mixer. But some preamps have quarter inch outputs as well. Occasionally you might have to get a D-sub connector for outputs. All these things can be found easily.

A mixer would probably give you the best value for that many pre's. The Soundcraft M8 would work well.

A unit having tubes in it, says NOTHING about it`s quality.

Buck You use the Akai dps16 like I do do you have one of these pres for when you record drums? I read you were using the Focusrite Voicemaster last time I heard you talking about Pres. Im considering the Behringer vx2000, which is supposed to be a copy of that exact pre. are you Happy with It?

there is a company called "mackie" that produces these weird micpres. They call them "mixer", you should look out for the smaller ones with the "vlz pro" in the name. They don't have no toobes in them, but they sound pretty good (I couldn't believe it myself at first, I always thought that without these "toobes" glowing behind little windows I will never get that "pro" sound). You can either put them on top of a table or mount them in a rack, and all these connectors are on the top/front of the unit. I am not sure if mackie is the only company that builds these "mixers", but i think every studio should have one of these. A couple of micpres with eq's, faders and many little knobs (some of them make little lights blink or change color, cool!), and an optional summing bus, and everything in one little box! Great idea!

I use a MindPrint Envoice, not a Focusrite.... although, the Focusrite Voicemaster is a fine preamp in the same price range!

Yeah, I have the DPS-16.
I recommend using a tube-preamp with the Akai, though.
Digital recordings usually need tube-warmth to sweeten things up a bit.

The Voicemaster can be just a tad harsh when compared to a true tube-preamp, because it's solid-state and very transparent.
