Your method would probably work great ... if you weren't a picky person with specific needs.
In your case, arguments could be made for or against any of the options mentioned thus far. If you don't like the SM-58, then you might not like the SM-7, because they do share some similarities -- I believe they even use the same (or at least similar) capsule. The SM-7 does have the optional presence boost, but I'm not sold on how much that ultimately changes it's tone. Not to mention that some of the other dynamics you found to be a bit dull.
The 4050 and 4047 are great mics, but I wouldn't go near a nasal voice with a 10-foot poll if all I had were Audio Technica condensers. Unless you want to sound like an old, twangy country singer.
For a midrangy voice, I would generally tend to gravitate towards mics that have a healthy proximity effect, along with an airy presence boost in the higher frequencies. The classic "scoop." Problem there is that it doesn't sound like you are too crazy about mics that can be sibilant, based on your experience with the Rode mics. Unfortunately, that doesn't leave us with too many options left. Maybe you could pick the least of the evils and try that out ... and if it doesn't work, ebay it and try something else.
