SP1 Disposable Mic

Dracon said:
Oh by the way! Shipping was not free at Musician's friend. It's free if you buy $200 worth of stuff. Yeah! Thanks!
So, I won't buy the SP1 with the mic stand.

At 6.95 (I think that's the current MF price for the mic alone) it's amazing they work at all. I've got a couple I bought to get my order over the $200 mark, and to use at weddings and block parties for drunks and evangelists. They have an on/off switch on them, they feel like a real mike, and if you EQ the hell out of them voices are intelligible. And if the best man pukes on it, just rinse it out and it may still work. If not, give it to your 2-year-old to play with. They love stuff like that.

Well I hope that you like the V67G mic. Within the price range you talk about it is a good choice.

Now for the long term plan...when I heard your description of your voice what really came into my head was 'ribbon'.

So in summary, there is nothing you hate about the ADK mics. Am I wrong in assuming this?

Hate is a pretty strong word. I usually save it for pretty naughty things, certainly not ADK mics. Nonetheless, I do like other mics and use others most the time.

Yeah! I'd thought of a Ribbon, but that's a little down the line. Not quite ready to handle that mic (financially or professionally).
After I get a few notches on my belt, and I've saved up a little I may go for a Ribbon. Although the BLUE brand really interests me, and I'd like to test one of their tube mics.

Forget Hate. It's all semantics really. You are not even willing to say there is something you would like to see improved, changed, different in the ADK mics. I'm not sure anyone else in this forum could say the same for any of the mics they love.
Now, I would be more inclined to believe you, if you told me that the ADKs are the only mic you prefer in that price range. I'm not saying that you should not be happy with your mic, but there is gotta be something you would like to see improve (even if its marketing).
I personally don't swear by any brand, nor am I a cult follower of anything. I may be overly enthusiatic about something for a period of time, but that about it. :)
Maybe I'm a cynic, but when people are too eager about something an alarm goes off in my head telling me there is an alterior motive why they are so eager. Even Harvey (who I am sure has worked with millions of mics) will not tell you that there is one brand or even one mic that he absolutetly loves.

I guess I don't get it. All I can say is what I've said. I like ADK mics, they're great at their price points, I've tried of bunch, own one, own other mics and use them alot. To put it in context, I record solo fingerstyle acoutic guitar, three mic channels (pair of SDs and one LD). What my mic locker doesn't have in quanity is made up in quality. I have these mics:

2x Schoeps CMC6/MK4
Microtech Gefell UMT 800
CAD VX2
ADK A48

I'm adding a pair of Gefell M295 SDs and I'll probably be adding another LD or two (or a ribbon). I chose the A48 because it is so different from the other LDs I have. It's bright and tight. The CAD VX2 is lush and rich. The Gefell UMT800 is neutral and smooth. The Schoeps are, well they're Schoeps. Simply stunning. I like the mics I have plenty. It took quite a bit of time (trial and error mostly) to choose them. Of course, the pres used influences things, and there are many other factors affecting the sound.

So, again, I don't get what you're trying to say.

Okay! 1st Let me say that I'm glad you have more than one ADK in your stash. That tells me you are not an ADK groupie.

I apologize for my diatribe on my previous post. I guess my straight to the point questions are:
What are the shortcommings of the ADK you have?
What specifically is that you like about the ADK so much? (Fullness, versatility, range, etc).
In summary, I want to know strengths and weakness of mics.
I really like my E835 and if you ask me which one to get between the Sennheiser or the Shure SM58. I'll tell you that the Sennheiser has a fuller tone (although they are very close contenders), I prefer the Sennheiser.
I feel that the Sennheiser gives the voice a nice coloration, that the Shure lacks. However, the Sennheiser is not a very good mic for capturing very low end, soft sounds. It just lacks that sensitivy. In that case perhaps testing the SM58 (since it rolls off at the bottom) it might be better because it doesn't seem to capture as much BASS.
However, instead of going with the SM58 I decide for the MXL V67G which is a completely different animal for around the same price ($111 with shipping). After I test it, I'll tell you how it compares to the Sennheiser. However, I'm very confident I'll like it.

Trying out ADK Microphones

Dracon said:
Are you saying that GW does not carry them or that they do? If they do carry them I can try one out, if they don't then kinda hard to try one out. I guess I can try one out if I go on vacation to Victoria.

Guitar Center does not carry ADK. ADK doesn't want them to.

www.proaudiotoys.com carries all the different ADK models with a 30 day return policy, so if you want to try out a mic or two, it's pretty much risk free. That way you can try out the mic in your own environment. Doesn't do a whole lot of good to hear mics in the store anyway.

Yes! You are right, that trying the mic at the store doesn't really give it justice as to how it will sound in your own house. However, if that's the only way you can try it out then it's better than the other option (not trying it out). Every mic will give you a general indication of what it sounds like if you try it at the store.

P.S. Thanks for the link.

Got my MXL V67G Today!

Hell yeah!

Well, what can I say. It's probably not the best condenser out there, but for my voice, man does it give it a nice coloration. Granted I've only done like five tests with the mic, and I really didn't get a manual with the mic, so I'll have to get one form on-line.
I thought that the response would be the same so the first time I used it, I had it a little angled with the top point up at 45 degrees. I wasn't getting that good of response, so I put it at 90 (straight up and down) so that the cone would be pointing at me.

Well, it still didn't give me a great response. I went to the MXL website and found the specs. It turns out that it has a better response from the front than the back (it's not the same), so I placed it with the letters facing me, and test it again. Even if I sit far away (with all the room noise, and crappy room acoustics) the mics sounds pretty sweet.

If you only want to spend $99 and get a decent condenser with a nice coloration on those long freqs (bass), then I would suggest this mic. Let's say that if I had the choice between this and the 990, I would go with this one. I'm going to test it with my acoustic guitar, but I don't think I'll be dissapointed. I'll plug in the cheap XLR cables that I got and I might try both mics at once to see what I get.

Anyway, yeah I'm excited.
