Oh by the way! Shipping was not free at Musician's friend. It's free if you buy $200 worth of stuff. Yeah! Thanks!
So, I won't buy the SP1 with the mic stand.

There is also a recently released Audio Technica AT2020 mic selling for 100. They state a low mass diaphram thats taylored for vocals. Who knows though. I'm curious. It's so "value priced".
There aren't many pickins for low end mics that do vocals justice. Maybe this delivers?

BTW, I have a CAD M177 that I put some decent parts in. Its good but still wasn't as good as a stock MC012 on vocals. Even with the better parts installed.

Octane is an 8-channel mic pre, made by M-Audio.

LOL, yeah I'm old enough to get Carlton Your Doorman! And if that's the case you might like the V67. Or it may like you, sonically speaking.

Maybe you just need a touch of compression on your voice track. What are you using to record?

I got the free shipping from an eBay vendor.

I have a couple of 990's also. I don't like them for vocals at all, but they're decent for acoustics and guitar amps. I've heard of people using them for drum overheads, but I use the 603's for that.

Hey you guys. is a MXL V67G with Shock mount, ring mount and a 20' XLR cable for $99 a good deal or should I keep looking?

Well, that's what I'm talking about. A guy who knows what I want to hear.

Yeah! See, I tried the 990 and for my vocal it just plain sucked. The E835 sounds great and playing with proximity it gives my wife a nice warm sound. I can't pin point who she reminds me of, but it a nice soft warm kinda raspy voice with the proximity effect. Pefect for her voice. After I add the music on me, I sound like I'm wearing a sock on my tounge.
I should have probably gone with the SM58 but it was originally suppose to be my wife recording her voice. Now, she wants me to record some stuff. She thinks it sounds fine, but I disagree.

P.S. I'm using some cheapo stuff called Audio Studio 7 but it works, and I've tried the compression. What really worked was what Harvey told me which was to bring the 2&3K on the music down a 1.5dB and bring it up on the same on my vocals. That cleared things up a bit. However, my voice is still too soft. I'm going to keep playing with placement on the E835 and see what I get. I'm actually using a quasi scientific method.
Place the mic in one area and measure the distance from my mouth to the mic, then shorten the distance by 2" each time (down to 6" starting from 12").
I record simulatneously on Audacity and the Audio Studio 7. Listen to them both with the music, without making any changes and solo them without making any changes. Then I write my results down on a word doc for keepsake.

Good deal.

Now the next question.
Do I get that first or a good set of headsets?
Never mind that was a real stupid question.
I'll get the mic first.

The Beta 58 is a great vocal mic, especially for women IMO. I like it better than the original 58. I actually bought one for the singer in my last band because she loved mine so much.

Dracon - I guess you have phantom power for the mic already. What are you using to record? Computer? SIAB?

I just bought the MXL V67G from e-Bay $111
Right now this is my setup
E835->Blue Blueberry Cable->Yamaha10/2->Delta 44->Audacity or Whatever!
Yeah, the Yamaha has spooky power.
SIAB? Man, keep throwing me stuff. I still have not looked up that , that, what was that again. Outrageous??? I'll have to go back and look.

Okay, Red Dwarf! You gotta tell me what Octane is.
I know is some marketing software, a band, a place you can buy CDs from and,,,,, wait I found it.

It's an M-Audio rack mountable 8 channel Digital Preamp. Am I right?

Damn, I'm still behind the curb. Was was the other one Sibian monster what?

SIAB = Studio In a Box. You know, those self-contained units, like a Porta-Studio but all digital.

Be careful, dude. You're showing all the early signs of G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). Slow down before you spend every penny you have.

Yes, you got Octane right.

NNNnnnnooo maaaaann I, I I I need this stufff now!!! Commmmon, ccccommmon! :D
I had $100 buck burning a hole in my Paypal account (from selling some of my stuff), and it was either that or a pair of Sennheiser HD280. I really, really, really thought about it for long time like about 1micron (You Know Farscape). I decided that since microphones is like pencils or brushes to painters, that a different brush would not hurt but help.
Now, the headsets I have a couple of chepo ones that I can use for a while.
No I don't have a DAW or SIAB, a Dell with a Delta 44, some crappy Altec Lasing computer speakers for Monitoring, the E835, the Yamaha 10/2 one patch cable, the XLR cable some other Y cables and free software.

Some of the best mics are not found at Guitar Center...

ADK Microphones, based in Vancouver, WA, are some of the finest and modestly priced microphones out there.

If you want to spend less than $200, then get the ADK A-51 DLX ($149) There is no better large diaphragm condenser microphone anywhere for under $300. In contrast to most of today's cheap condenser mics, the ADKs actually sound pleasant. They don't have the harsh highs and muddy mid range.

If you have a little more money to spend, the ADK Hamburg or Vienna models have improved on the original A-51 design. The Hamburg is designed to give that vintage German tone that the Neumann mics are famous for, and the Vienna has the brighter Austrian sound, more like a vintage C-12.

The ADK TC (around $599) rivals any other tube condenser mic in the world.

If you're considering AT, AKG, Oktava, MXL, BLUE, RODE, or Studio Projects, then try out ADK and hear what you've been missing at Guitar Center.

ADK mics are indeed excellent mics, throughout their pricepoints. I would not go so far as saying the ADK TC "rivals any other tube condenser mic in the world" though. It certainly rivals any tube mic in its price range. There are numerous tube mics that are simply at another level, including the ADK TT.

Have you tried both the TC and the TT? I've heard the TC is pretty much just a single pattern TT.

Are you saying that GW does not carry them or that they do? If they do carry them I can try one out, if they don't then kinda hard to try one out. I guess I can try one out if I go on vacation to Victoria.

I've not read the that thread yet. But can I ask you what you don't like about the ADKs?

I like ADK mics, quite a bit. I own an A-48, and although many don't care for that mic, I enjoy it alot. I did say that I believe there are higher quality tube mics than the ADK TC, but that the TC rivals any tube mic in its price range.

The TL is another great mic in its price range, perhaps the best. The TT is wonderful. And the newer Hamburg and Vienna are great inexpensive mics. I guess I don't care much for the SC-2, but I don't care much for any of the 1/2" SD Chinese condensers - none haven't gotten there yet.

So in summary, there is nothing you hate about the ADK mics. Am I wrong in assuming this?
