I just got a 424mkIII and am wanting to get my first mike. I need one that does a good job on vocals and accoustic guitar. I'm considering an MXL V67M, an MXL 603, an MXL V63M, a Behringer B1, and...a Shure SM 57. Any advice would be appreciated. Also, will the recorder's pre-amp work okay with the MXL mikes? Thanks.

hey rockfish,
I have the 424mkIII. I use 57s for alot of stuff. I also use a 603s, but you need phantom power for it. They both work good for vocals and acoustic guitar. IMO. I know there are lots of better mics for these apps but for the bucks I like the 57s.

The SM57's hard to beat, especially at discounted prices,...

like you'll see, if you watch the sales at GC, etc. The last time I scored SM57's, they were $80 for mic, stand and cable! Try to beat that! Oh yeah, they sound great, are durable, and are great all-around mics, good for vocals and instruments. /DA

rockfish, the Studio Projects B1 large diaphram condenser is due out
shortly, and will have a street price of about $80!
Their website is www.studioprojectsusa.com
They are also (eventually) coming out with what looks like a very good
tube mic pre for around $225 street price (or less).
If that's out of your budget you may want to check out the DBX mini pre,
or the M-Audio Audio Buddy, both in the $100 and under range for
each one respectively. Best of luck on whatever you get!
