Just FYI... If you're interested in making your own mic there is an article in the March 2003 issue of "QST Magazine". A publication of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) - a "ham radio" organization. I suspect you'll have to check your public library or favorite new stand for this issue.

good stuff, pundit! Have you tried any of these?

Not yet but I'm on my way!!
I've printed out the pcb artwork on clear sheet for the G7 tube mic and am ordering parts. The biggest decision will be what capsule I use. The AKG C12 capsule, as specified, is NOT the same as the C12 capsule used back in the 50's and early 60's in the original C12 tube mic. That capsule was a work of art and has not been made for decades.

There's a thread on the 'Tech Talk forum' discussing possible alternatives.

All the Gyraf projects look like they'll produce pretty sexy noises!! ;)

I have been looking at these but have not had the time to jump in. One question, if you know the answer, does the tube mic use an existing capsule or is he building one from scratch? Not sure how they would tension the mylar if they are building from scratch. For that matter, I'm not even sure that was a stupid question or not.

Let me know if you have any insight.

Middleman,

From memory, that project used an existing capsule, although there is a thread over there which has been discussing the pros and cons of a DIY capsule, etc.

Pundit,

I think we have communicated over at RO

:) .

The recommended capsule is the AKG C12 (current version).

There has been discussion over at recording.org...'Tech Talk'...about using Chinese capsules as an alternative. A dual diaphragm capsule from Soundking in China has been suggested as a possibilty.

Another thread in 'Tech Talk' DIY forum has also discussed the technicalities of building a capsule from scratch.

Cheers ;)

Cheers Pundit!

I was just about to ask if anyone had any links to mic building pages - I'm doing a paper on Mic construction and design at college. I was gonna ask Harvey for the basics (like he put in the big thread somewhere on the forum), but this seems pretty good.

Cheers!
