Mic Comparison Test Criteria For Voice

Hi,

Uncloaked lurker here.

I have a few mics, (none of which are great) and a I'll be borrowing a few better ones and perhaps even renting a couple of big buck ones to record and evaluate my voice on different units.

Is there a standard for doing this? I'm assuming the recording should be totally dry, and all else be as equal as possible. What should I sing? A familiar song? Scales? What about dynamic range?

I'm not being super critical as this is just amateur home recording stuff, but I'd spend real money on a mic if the test results proved worth it.

Thanks

Just a bump, as I`m interested in hearing what people have to say about this...

Someone may chime in with a more scientific approach, but I'd just sing something that you're likely to record in future.

There's no point doing a shootout with nice melodies and scales if you're going to use the mic for death metal growlings.

Of course, have all the mics tested in the same position, in the same room, same distance, same pre, etc.

Of course your voice can change from take to take, too, so I suggest trying to use as many mics as you can record separately at one time going. Place them close to each other, but so they don't interfere with each other's pickup pattern.
Sing a selection of your stuff that you are comfortable with - low and high parts, soft and loud. You'll probably find that one mic works better than another for certain things and others for others.

You're getting confused Henry; That's just for seeing how heavy your keys are.

:D With the amount of company vehicles you would think that I would hire someone to just carry them around for me.

I've got nothing to say on the basis of mic shootout/comparisons, as I've never tried to set one up before but as far as the "uncloaked lurker" status goes, I'm freaking amazed! You joined in Sep 2009 and this is your FIRST POST! You should win some kind of award for that, man. :D

record a whole song. something like the style you normally record. or use an old recording and just overdub new vocals. my point being is don't audition the mics solo'd, audition them in a mix.

That's nothing. I joined in December 2005 but never made a post until December 2009. I didn't even enter the site ! I'd totally forgotten I'd ever joined. It was sheer coincidence that I found my way back here. So I guess I won't win any awards as I wasn't even a lurker.
Round these parts, you get arrested for 'lurking'. :D

When you are all done with the shootout, go find a used SM-7 for 250 and. buy it. :) Fabulous mic.
