Hey wireneck, I downloaded a previous another version of this song a few months ago and still have it somewhere. The kick could stand out more but besides that, speaking as a metal lover, your music sounds great. :)

Its probably a personal preference, but its the tone of it that i aint diggin. It doesnt seem to sit well in the mix. Maybe try changing the eq. Try taking some mids out or boosting at lo and hi end more.
Good mix though, like the toms. toms could maybe come up in the mix a tad.

Sounds pretty good to me listening on decent PC speakers with a sub. The kick could use a little more beef maybe. The click is there though. The parts with the clicky hihat work are too loud (the hihat that is) , and so is the ride in spots. Pretty damn nice though I must say.

don't remember the other versions sound too well (listened to it a while ago), but I definitely like the guitar sound here.

I'm listening on headphones, but there's just a tad too much kick. Or maybe just a little too much low end in it. Otherwise the whole thing is pretty damn bad ass.

etnoziroh thanks for the listen. I tweaked with the kick as well as the low end of the bass some more. I think the kick stands out a little better now.

systmovadown The mics were Shure Sm 57 and Electrovoice-635a (Guitars). The drum mics were Shure sm57 (snare top and bottom, 12" tom), Audiotechnica pro 25 (floor tom), shure beta 52 (kick), Mxl603s (overheads) and a Studio prjects B1 (room mic).

Hangdawg and Daenn thank you for taking the time to listen/comment.

The mix has been updated on the same site

Wireneck, hope you don't mind, can I pick your brain?
Just curious, have you always thrown in the 57, or is this a recent thing?
How do you balance the 57 with the 635 (one track with each mic panned either direction)?
And how many guitar tracks were used/do you usually use?

Also was wondering what kind of amp you use, I think you said it was a marshall, but I'm not sure.

Finally, if you don't mind, could you post your signal chain?

Thanks,

I like the tune for sure, nice and interesting and the mix is good too.

If i may knitpick though, it sounds like your scraping the pick across the strings with a sideways attack as apposed to attacking them flush with the pick.

That sorta bugged a little.

But nice tune!
Good Job!. :)

Sure thing.....

Its sort of recent discovery. My demos in the past were all done with my Marshall bi-chorus 200 head through a JCM 1960a Cab. For whatever reason the Shure Sm-57 sounds like ass when micing that amp distorted. I guess technically speaking the 57 can produce good results but I found that I liked the Ev-635a alot more.
Fast forward to about 5 months ago. I picked up a Mesa Boogie Nomad 45 head. While recording these newer demos I got the itch to see what the 57 would sound like on that particular amp and to my surprise the results were good.

How do you balance the 57 with the 635 (one track with each mic panned either direction)?

I normally double track the rhythm guitars using one mic. In this case it was the nomad head with the Ev-635a mic. So I do 2 rhythm tracks and pan them almost hard left and right. Then for the leads I usually fool around and find some different tones that seem to sit well in the mix so I dont have to do alot of eq'ing at mix time. The leads on this were the nomad using a 57 and the marshall using the EV.

Also was wondering what kind of amp you use, I think you said it was a marshall, but I'm not sure.

Marshall bi-chorus 200 (exact model number escapes me right now). Its from the early Valvestate series. Yes the VS for the most part suck terribly but they managed to get this one and one other model in this series right. BTW....This is the head that was used on Death's Sound of Perseverance.

Mesa Boogie Nomad 45 short tube head. This model is discontinued but I think there are still some models of the nomad available.

Finally, if you don't mind, could you post your signal chain?

Vintage Gibson 1979 Les Paul Custom---to---Marshall or mesa head (with jcm or other marshall cab)---to---Ev-635a or Shure Sm57---to---Soundtracs Solo 24 channel mixer---to-- Alesis Adat.

Thats pretty much it man. Hope that helps some. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask or email me wireneck@hotmail.com

Finster-thanks for the listen.

No clue man, im self taught so my technique is probably whack as hell. Possibly a mic placement thing making it sound more apparent than it is? I didn't notice it but im sort of brain dead to my own playing. Thanks for the feedback.

Didn't know that. Thx for the info. Chuck has always been an inspiration to me. Just learned Without Judgement today.

Dude I liked this last recording you did. Sounded like you changed some parts. I didn't get as bored for some reason this time around. Good Job! You plan on doing anything with some vocals? Are you in the thought process of doing any other songs? Keep us posted Wire.

Thanks glad your digging it now. I don't think I changed anything other than the mix itself since your last post. Perhaps it just took a few listens for it to click with you?

There are 6 songs in various stages of tracking right now for this project. I'll post them as I finish. Were still searching for suitable vocals for this project. I've got someone on it right now, not sure how its going to turn out at this point.

thanks again for the comments/listens

You are killin this place!

This rocks even without lyrics. Sweet riffs, cool tempo and pace.
No mix comments on this setup.

Holy crap is that a Jake-Owa endorsement? You didn't even tell me to fuck off or anything. LMAO
No seriously thanks for the listen man.
