although commonly metal guitarists used scooped mids, everything, and I do mean E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G from the guitar, bucker's used, pedals, preamp, power amp, & cab have everything to do with a metal players tone....
You know, I think you're right. I don't know why I didn't consider that. The argument was more about amps but I'm sure the tone goes much deeper than just the amp.
If you're really looking for a kickin' metal tone, just follow these directions:
1. Buy a Boss DS-1, a Danelectro D-3, a Rogue DST-5, an Arion MTE-1, and a Boss SD-1.
2. Buy as many high quality monster patch cables as you can - the more we can preserve your tone while going from pedal to pedal, the better.
3. Build a pedalboard out of wood, nails, and more wood ala Zakk Wylde (this part is crucial).
4. String all of the pedals together in the above order.
5. Turn all of the pedals on, and crank your amp TO ELEVEN!
Pat yourself on the back, and welcome to metal heaven.
OR... buy yourself a decent guitar, as long as it has two humbuckers and plays well you're fine. Get a single pedal, since the more pedals, the less pure your tone. Something thick and scooped. Get a tube amp. Scoop, distort, volume, rinse, repeat.
My bad, that was only supposed to be once, but dial up is slow and I have a problem with just clicking until it does something. I don't think it actually takes 5x's the rep points away.
Just joking about the pedal combo by the way...wanna make that clear That chain was intentionally murder - every crappy pedal i could think of rolled in to one. Wouldn't want you guys to think i'm braindead

Sometimes it's kinda hard to be sarcastic on a forum, figured you were though considering you'd have to be a retarded jackass to use that combo of pedals.
