ok i got the third mix up

(just in time too lol, post was about to fall off the 2nd page in the clinic).

I did some subtractive eq on the snare in the areas M. brane suggested. I messed with the kick a tiny bit as well. Let me know if this third mix sounds any better. Its under the same name as the other two were. "A will only death could break"

Hmmmmm. Snare sounds louder. Did you bump the level up? I don't notice much difference in the EQ, but it seems to be sitting in the mix better tone-wise. I like what you did with the kick, but it seems a bit hot now.

Maybe more comp on the snare to even out the hits. It's a bit hot in some places, and too low in others.

<end nit-pick>

:D

Hey man!

This stuff is killer. Really great metal. If we lived close by we could play shows together for sure.

Good mix...I think the snare sound could use a bit of work, maybe some compression as it is quiet and loud in some parts. I think I would balance the guitars a bit louder but that's just personal preference...

wow the part at about 3:05 is really kickin my ass...the drummer is awesome
good guitar solo

All the tones are really good, I like the tom sounds.

Take a listen to my band and let me know what you think, this is just a rough mix with no bass or vocals yet:

m. brane- i dont think i pushed up the snare level but i may have. Ill see if i can even out the hits a little more with some harder compression and bring down the kick hits a little bit.
SittinIdol- thanks for the listen, ill check out your stuff and let you know what i think when i get a chance. (dialup sucks)

Damn, I still like this song. The bass drum sounds better to me now. Maybe you didn't change it very much and it's my imagination but it seems better. I personally like how the kick is a little louder. Really hits hard.

dethska-

its not your imagination, i messed with the kick eq a good bit on that last mix. I really like it better now as well.
Sit tight i got a mix that hopefully is going to be close to the final uploading.

4th mix

Ok latest mix is up, i tried to tame the snare drum with some harder compression. It sounds to me like it still gets a little quiet in spots but im not sure if im going to be able to get it exactly the way i want it. The hits are incredibly inconsistent from section to section.
Ok so let me know if im getting close to calling this my final mix?

That fuckin Jams! Even without vocals it still jams.

It's getting there.

Everything seems to fit together well EQ wise. There's still a few snare level issues. He doesn't seem to hit the snare as hard when there's a lot of other things going on on the kit. A bit of fader riding would help that if you don't want to squash it any more.

One trick I sometimes use to get a bit more fullness to the drums during heavy parts is to bus the drum mix to an aux. track, insert a compressor with about a 5:1 ratio, and bring that track up just during the parts when the drums need some more balls.

This track is kickin' ass. I dig your stuff.:)

DevilizhStylez-

thanks for the listen and the compliments man.
M. Brane- I guess im going to have to actually sit down and watch the levels and try and map out where i need to push the snare up and down.
" This track is kickin' ass. I dig your stuff" thanks man, if only the other band members had been into the music as much as me, we probably would have turned out alot of crazy stuff. Im still trying to keep the writing going but fruity loops/drum machine is really giving me a creative headache. I just want to tap the stupid beat and be done but thats another thread.

curious what you used on the kick and snare? sounds great, man.

Jim

wire neck... i'm usually on my high jazz horse, telling everyone how 'jazz is so complex!' ... i listened to your song and though basically 'these guys are playing some crazy shit and, it's tight' ....so i mostly looked perplexed... as far as all this business about the snare and bass drum goes... the bass drum is perfect for the style... you need that click i think... the snare, i think it's just how the drummer tuned it..it sounds very very very cranked and very very muffled... i think the mic was just recording the sound, quite simply... it sounds clicky and not my kinda snare, but, again, for the style, it works and i don't think there's much you can do about it. the guitars are great with not an overuse of distortion.. i thought maybe you should've played a few more sparse solo's throughout the song, but, that's artistic licence, so...

all in all, the vibe is there, it's tight, the rest is to taste i think.
good job.

mix 5

ok mix 5 is up, i tried to really ride the fader and keep the snare in check. Hopefully it helped.
rewt- I used a shure beta 52 on the kick and an sm-57 on the snare. The kit we used were a set of pearl session customs.
Rassoodocks-thanks for the listen. I listen to my fair share of bands that use alot of odd timings (meshugga, spiral architect, canvas solaris) so thats prob where some of complexity or weirdness your hearing is coming from. "i thought maybe you should've played a few more sparse solo's throughout the song" I was unaware there was more than one solo in the song lol. thanks again for the listen

awesome playing on everybody's part!! not crazy about the sound of the snare drum. Dang!! Good luck with the move and new band members!!
Jason

Much better!

The overall level is a bit hot IMHO, but I can hear everything he's doin' now. Especially the stuff at 2:26 & 3:04. The only thing that stood out to me is the two breaks at 3:16 & 3:29. Would be cool to bump that last hit up on each of those for emphasis.

The levels are pretty good in my new cans (Senn HD280 pro), but I've only had 'em since Sat. Don't trust 'em that much yet.

I lost a tweeter on one of my Altecs :( so they're down until I can find replacements.

and yet another mix

ok i remixed with the snare hits a little lower than the last mix. It doesn't seem to be as overpowering now to my ears but its hard for me to tell without vocals in the mix.
JasonBird-thanks for the listen man. Im not real big on the snare sound myself. I think alot of it had to do with the way our drummer had it tuned but theres not much i can do about that.
M.brane- sorry to hear about your altecs man.

...and yet another critique.

Getting sick of me yet? :D LOL

OK, this sounds pretty damn good now. The only nit-pick I can come up with now is dropping the kick down some during the quieter passages at :21, 1:15, & 3:30. That way when the heavy part kicks in after that it'll really hit hard. I love dynamic shit like that.

The ol' Altecs have been good to my ears. I guess 30yrs is a pretty good run for the tweets. Hopefully I can find a similar pair that are just as good. I haven't been able to find any info at all on these speakers so direct replacements are out of the question.

hahaha

"Getting sick of me yet?" no not really. Its not like I have any new material to mess with since my band members left me.
Bringing the kick down in those sections sounds like a pretty good suggestion. Ill have to give it a shot. Im going to be doing some fader acrobatics on this one lol, muting tom tracks, moving the snare and kick. I guess thats what its all about though. Thanks for the ideas M. Brane.

Wireneck, VERY awesome!!! You guys definetly rock. Too bad you couldnt keep it together. Im a super huge fan of Opeth, In Flames, Dark Tranquility, ect. ect. Nice to see some metalheads on this board. Keep up the good work man!!! Gotta get some shuteye gonna go see Slayer/Haterbreed tommorow cant wait!!!

try this on for size

ok m. brane, i lowered the kick on the sections you suggested and it sounds pretty good to me. I think im definantly calling this mix (7) or either mix (6) the final. Check it out and let me know what you think.
