Messing with mid-side guitar

Finally got a good figure of eight mic, and using it as the side mic for mid-side acoustic guitar. Really loving the way it allows you to spread things out for a great stereo image. Just sounds more 3-D to me. Here's a sample. Sorry about the click track which you can hear in a couple of places, as well as some hiss and clicks here and there, but it's just a sample for example.

That's one heckuva sample just for example! The playing and the recording sound great. I love the mid-side technique, and you've used it well here.

What's the new mic that made you wanna give it a go?

Hey Bob, good to hear from you. Thanks for the encouragement. Our figure of 8 mic is an AEA R84, and we are loving it for guitar as well as vocals. Haven't tried it yet on electric guitar cab, but can't wait to.

Yeah--mine's a cheaper knock off ribbon, but I love it for that. I've actually mounted a pair together so they're always ready to go. Used it for percussion (and loved it) and on guitar cabs. Being able to dial in some stereo spread made leads sound much more "present" in the mix than a standard mono down the middle track.

Thanks for taking the time to listen. Just two guitars, each tracked mid side. If you want a good cheap ribbon, ask White Strat. He is the undisputed king of the budget mic around here. I think the Cascade fatheads have a pretty good reputation.

I may quit guitar and then this website, in that order, if that's just mucking about..

Thanks for the comments. Actually, the playing turned out fine, it was the audible noise that I was apologizing for. Probably going to have to re-track because of the click track that you can hear a couple of times when the recording gets really quiet (Unless anyone can suggest a good way to get rid of it).

Sounds very cool. I always find myself double-tracking acoustic tracks because they often sound so thin and flat by themselves. But there are times I don't like the result at all; in particular on really spare recordings where the double tracking is more noticeable.

The technique demonstrated here seems to give the best of both worlds in a way... an interesting stereo image, but with a single performance. I like it a lot. Thanks for posting!

Check out group buy ribbons for a bargain. White strat is the expert on those. Cascade fatheads have a good rep. for not that much money, although I've never heard one.
