Here's my collection....
6 - AKG D2300S
1 - Realistic stereo electret condenser
1 - Shure PG58
1 - Shure 565SD (Unisphere - I)
1 - Piezo guitar mic
1 - Recently purchased Nady ribbon mic
The AKGs... well, I bought three of them at something like $4 apiece from Musician's Friend and when they turned out half decent, I bought three more. They're cheap, so they're good for gigs or loaning out. That and I've found they're decent for drum overheads. (I know I'll probably be branded a heretic for not using condensers overhead, but....)
The PG58 is my primary vocal mic, though I'm hoping the Nady will take over, as I've never really found a vocal mic that I like. The PG is okay, but it seems a little muddy sounding. It's just an all-arund "okay" mic. Not great at anything, not bad at anything, just pretty "okay".
Piezo guitar mic.... Cheap, but if you don't mind seriously rolling off the highs in post, it's pretty decent as a Cello mic. (Scary, no?) I have yet to actually use it on a guitar, if memory serves.
Oh, and the Realistic stereo mic. Mid-side stereo, old, more self noise than I'd like. It makes a decent piano mic, though I keep toying with the idea of redesigning its amp circuit to reduce the self noise. Or maybe I'll just replace it with
a VP88 when I scrape up the cash. Either way....
My favorite, though, is probably
the Shure 565SD. It's a decent vocal mic, but I mainly use it for off-axis miking of brass instruments. Three feet out, one foot over.
