An update from my original post much earlier in this thread. As before, I'm only recording solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar:

2x Schoeps CMC6/MK4
2x Microtech Gefell M295 (on order)
Microtech Gefell UMT 800
CAD VX2
ADK A48

sdelsolray - that's an impressive list of nice mics!

Do you think the Gefell will give you a better/different sound than the Schoeps? I'd be interested to hear how the Gefell M295 sound like, coz I plan on getting sth that sounds better than my Neumman KM184.

I don't believe the M295s are better than the Schoeps, different - yes. Generally, they're as accurate and detailed, if not more, and less colorful - more transparant perhaps, all within the Neumann pedigree soundscape. I've become quite a fan of Microtech Gefell mics, at least for my uses.

So far it's pretty nice on a few acoustic guitars and some vocals. But I haven't tried it on a working mix yet... will do that on Monday, so I'll comment on how that goes.

Overall, I think this is a very nice mic for the money. Seems like it'll get a lot of use here.

and the list grows while my pockets shrink.......

1 X BLUE baby bottle

1 X AT4040

1 X ATM25

Bowisc, tell me about that NOS Siemens in the NTK. I got an NTK recently and am a bit disappointed in it, particularly the unpleasant highs. From guitar amps I know changing a preamp tube can make a lot of difference, so I am just wondering.

Well, all I got so far is:

AT 4033
Rode NTK

Not counting a couple of live mics: SM58, beta 58a and some 40 year old dynamic Beyers I used for recording reel to reel back in the 70's

I hear an improvement in the high-end. Not as "bitey", and much smoother. Also, the low-end seems to sound a bit tighter. Was it worth the $100? To me, yes.

Bowisc, you lead the way, drag me down with you or whatever ...

I just ordered the $99 Siemens E88CC goldpin from the Tubestore. Surely the Sovtek in the NTK may be inferior quality, so my first act was to order the Philips JAN $19. Then they recommended a Tesla for only $10 more. They said it would give you 90% what the Siemens have. Well, after some recent bad experience with tubes going bad, I decided not to take any chances and get the real thing, go all the way. After all it is only about 20% of what the mic cost me.

My experience with guitar amps is that choice of preamp tubes does make a difference. It may not be very audible when the rest of the band is playing. But recording a voice is a different thing. It is up front and detail will be more audible. When the tube arrives I will try to make A/B recordings before and after the change.
