Hi Everyone,

I'm new to "this board" and wanted to share some info with you all. It's nice to find a forum I can relate to.
In reference to Tascams PE-120 :

They're electret condensors. They take one AA battery each and won't run on phantom power. Once upon a time they were OK but there are so many decent quality small diaphram condensors out there cheap (Octavas, MXL-603s,etc) that unless they were damn near free, I'd pass on them. I rarely put them up anymore. The self noise is a little high.

Not so Mike,

The PE-120 will "operate with a "AA" but that is not the correct battery that the mic functions with to spec. It uses a cylindrical 9 volt battery with a transistor
built in. In particular the Eveready 206. If you are using a "AA" battery that would be the reason for the "high self noise" you are experiencing...the voltage isn't enough to run the FET circuitry and the microphone requires alot of mic pre which in turn raises the noise floor of the mic. I have used the PE's on acoustic guitar with great results, (as a stereo pair) one on the neck about 9th fret and the other on the lower bout of the guitar.

I certainly don't consider my mic selection vast, moreover, selective to perform specific tasks :

2x Groove Tubes GT-33 with omni and cardiod caps
1x M-Audio Solaris -muilti patt.
1x Rode NT-1
1x Marshall MXL V67
2x AT mb4000
1x CAD m169
2x Tascam PE-120 with cardiod and omni caps
2x AT Digital Reference 3700
1x AKG C1000
3x SM57
2x SM81

Dang, I thought I got a good price one my TLM-103 from tubedude, until I checked in here and saw this old thread.

There I see this thread that tube started 2 years ago, and see my stinking 103 for 100 bucks less than what he sold it to me for. :D

Oh well I can't complain, I got a good deal on it, and it's an incredibly great sounding and versatile mic. Plus, the retail price on them went up considerably after I got it off of him. :)

My Mic Cabinet

Hi All -

I've discovered that collecting mics can become a nasty habit!
Almost as bad as coveting compressors!

(1) STUDIO PROJECTS TB-1 LARGE DIAPHRAGM TUBE CONDENSER
(1) STEDMAN N90 LARGE DIAPHRAGM DYNAMIC
(1) AKG C3000 LARGE DIAPHRAGM CONDENSER
(1) SAMSON CO-1 LARGE DIAPHRAGM CONDENSER
(2) AKG C1000S SMALL DIAPHRAGM CONDENSER
(3) OKTAVA MCO12 SMALL DIAPHRAGM CONDENSER
(2) SHURE BETA 58 DYNAMIC
(3) SHURE SM 58 DYNAMIC
(1) SHURE SM 57 DYNAMIC

I got most of these on eBay. Currently saving my pennies for:

Electro Voice RE20 (for kick drum, etc)
Sennheiser MD421 (every darn thing)
Neumann TLM-103 (sweet on vox!)
more SM57's (can't have enough!)

i've only been doing this for about a year

-Rode NT1-A
-Shure SM57
-Superlux CM-H8K/C (2)
-Sennheiser e609

Mics???? How about mic?

A mic collection???? Heh............. How about a mic... point blank?? :p

I don't do much other than vocals in my little setup, so my mic collection is small:

1 Shure SM57
1 Shure AM10

I hope to get a Studio Progects B1 in the near future or Maybe even an AT 3035 or the new BLUE 8BALL (looks very intriguing).

Brumby, I notice you have 2 MB4000 mics in your arsenal, what do you use them for and what is your opinion of them?

Can't beleive this thread pops up still. 17,000 views and counting!

I guess since I started it, I'll amened my list.

1 Soundeluxe U-195
Sennheiser Md-441-U
Sennheiser MD-421-U-5
3 Sennheiser e609 Silvers
3 Sennheiser e504's
1 Sennheiser e609
(As you can see I still like Sennheisers alot.)
1 Pair of Studio Projects C4's (great mics for the $)
One SM57
One Cheapo AT handheld I use for talkback
Behringer omni stick mic, whatever it is called, never use it.
I think thats it, gives me good coverage on all the drums and guitars, and I have one good mid/high grade vocal condensor for vocals or whatever, and one high grade dynamic (441) for when the Soundeluxe doesnt fit right, if ever. Notice that my best mic right now costed as much as all of my mics in the orginal thread starter post, ha.
I wouldnt mind having a few more select mics, but I dont need them. I stay busy and use what I have well and I need money in converters instead of mics.

MXL V67G - $89
MXL 990 - $49
CAD GXL2200 -$49
MXL 603s (Matched Pair Kit) $175

Shure SM57 -??? (old)
Shure SM58 - ??? (old)
Sennheiser e609 Silver $99
University Sound (Altec) U660A - Free

I don't spend much on mics I guess... compared to most of you...

BLUE Baby Bottle (new - £250 bargain!)
Stagg 1" condenser (clone of something) (new - £120 end of line)
