What's your setup/recipe for approximating the sound of a mellotron?

Download the wav samples here, then google yourself a shareware wav file player.

.

So you just drop the wavs into an editor (a la Cakewalk Sonar)?

I use the m-tron soft synth.

really good emulation

I use a custom proteus patch derived from hours of A/B tweaking. More flexible than a sample and sounds great.

Care to post that patch so others can admire your handywork?

I will too someday, but I was curious what fellow members were doing. :D

Thanks for the responses, keep 'em coming!

Wow, I need to check some of this stuff out! I've always liked the Mellotron sound, but never knew there were patches etc. to emulate it.

To hear Robert Fripp talk about the original instrument, it was the biggest pain in the ass ever.

I bought the MTron. It sounds like cheesey cassette samples, complete with hiss and artifacts. It was probably a fun parlour instrument in the late 50's. Taking one on the road must have been a hall-o-fame PITA.

I think part of the "sound" was the detuning caused by the motors.

There's a video on the web of RickWakeman talking about burning a couple in his back yard. Said he wished he still had them, they coulda paid for his divorce! :D

Try the late sixties.

Strawberry Fields Forever was the first hit record to feature the Mellotron and it came out in 1967.

Cheers,

I have M-Tron as well. For being an emulation, I really like the sounds in it a lot.

Love the sounds, but now I want to be able to tweak parameters like pitch, tone, volume, attack and release from real knobs while I'm playing. I guess I need some kind of controller for that. Anyone have recomendations on a good controller to do this kind of tweaking? Can the same type of controller also help me out with pans, fades and plug-in or device parameters within Live 6?

Thanks!

I played with a guy who had one... it was. I think it made him quit playing.

Samples are the way to go, after all Mellotrons were the original samplers.
