Not sure who you're talking to, but more modern equipment is not always "trading up". It depends.

As far as M-Tron, I would say that it is a very cool instrument in actual use. The samples aren't sparkling stereo samples of the latest sounds. But they have an amazing emotional impact within actual music. I like the M-Tron's approach of emulating the original instrument, along with all of it's limitations: 8 second note length, 35 note range on the keyboard, and so on.
