Can anybody tell me the differences between various Sennheiser MD421's? I'm trying to locate a couple of used ones and as I look around, I see Black ones with black grills, white ones with black grills, and the occasional black ones with silver grills.

I remember reading something on this once but can't find anything. Are their sounds any different? Are any of them "better" mics than the others? What if a guy had a black one and a white one? Would that be a better vibe with the yin/yang thing happening?

Thanks for any info in advance!

We did a test recently on some older 421s versus some brand new MD 421 IIs and found that the new model 421 IIs sounded a bit nicer and had slightly less noise when compared to some of the older U-4/U-5 versions. In general any model 421 kicks butt and is a serious recording tool for many applications. Plus it is very difficult to go wrong with any of them as they're built like Sherman tanks.:)

Generally speaking the black ones are better for rythm instruments and bass. The white ones work better on country and classical and are usually more expensive than the black ones.

sorry.... bad joke ;p
