Hello all,
i have an old Sony MZ-R50 (Which i really like),
i made some recording useing the mic
and i would like to transfer them to my pc for final editing.
i know i can use the analog line out jack and connect to to my SB but im looking for MD that can do it useing USB and Software,
i know there are some NETMD models and now the new HIMD devices.
can anyone point me to the right MD that can do it?

Thanx in Advance,
Shahar

Welcome to the bbs! :)

I don't know of any MD that can buffer a large selection and usb to pc. I have a couple of MD devices and they're all real-time. Some have dig out tho, so you could go dig in to something and usb that way, or get a card w/ dig ins and get a clean transfer.

That's one reason why I upgraded from my MD multitrack, to transfer it, I had to go analog to pc sound card and it was hard to get good results.

Maybe it does exist, tho, it's been a while since I looked at MD stuff.

I've recently used an old format MD recorder and just bought one of the new Hi-MD machines and this is my findings...

You can perform file transfers using USB with the new Hi-MD machines and Hi-MD discs, but you cannot put old format discs into the new machines and upload using USB.

The reason for this is Sony have implemented DRM (digital rights management) in their new Hi-MD system in which (in their mind) they are controlling and preventing piracy of copyrighted material. The old format never had any DRM so all uploads are prevented.

The crazy DRM that Sony have implemented (which is definite proof of liquid lunches by their designers) would be another subject!

That sucks, for sure!

Thanx for the info!;)

The new Hi-MDs can transfer

The new Hi-MD units transfer from MD to computer through USB, I hear. I don't have one myself, so I haven't tried it. Here is a place to learn more.

(The transfer only works for newly recorded MDs. If you have old-format MDs, you are stuck)

Also, even with the new format, the files come over in Sony's proprietary format. But there is a translator that can be downloaded from Sony's web site, I hear.

If I were going to go out and buy a portable recorder today, I would look at iRiver.
