hey,
i just wanted to get people's thoughts and experiences in working with these.
i'm looking to buy one and would like to know the benefits and pitfalls of each and which people prefer.

thanks,
allan

I just think the MD8 is the way to go,...

for the simple reason, it gives you 8-tracks, plus all the bells & whistles that Yamaha could muster into one tabletop "porta-format" unit. 4-tracks is 4-tracks, but 8-tracks is 8. 8's twice as good as 4,... do the math.

Otherwise, the MD4/MD8 units are fundamentally alike.

Shoot for the sky, & don't be short sighted. Get the MD8. Skip the MD4.

If you really want the premium Minidisc 4-tracker, skip the Yamaha, and get the Tascam 564.

If you want the "big bang" of 8-tracks, get the Yamaha MD8.

Trust me. ;)

yeah go for 8

i dabbled with the MD4 and wound up scurrying soon for an 8.
save yourself the trouble...8's a nice setup for home recording.

alot depends if you midi'ing and sht too

:D Yo Shingleman:

I had/have a Yam MD8. Nice box and not too difficult to learn to use; however, it's OLD technology and NOT CD quality.

Spend a few more pezzutos and get any of the 8 track digital boxes that have built-in CD burner.

BYW, I really dig the CD/DVD burner in my PC -- so much faster than my DAW. But, I'm still using the 2816 DAW.

maybe maybe not

I haven't found a digital recorder that I have liked better than the MD8.
and on board CD-R would be sweet or at least fiber optic transfer to burn..

tried the Rolands and didn't like the multi-function keys (fhkng had 10 different functions and buttons to push just to turn up the treble!.)
then new "red-box" flash-camera cards suck I benn told.

I tried pc- cakewalk...it's a major change over. $$$...and new problems.
currently, returning the m-audio pc-usb.

The pc CD-R burning is cool, and's got my vote too....but I haven't found anyone yet who can pass a "blind-fold" test on MD and anything else...it's good.

scratching albums, old hissing/warbled cassettes...but my MD's have less scratch problems than CD-R's!...

MD rock and kick ass......but the harddrive pc guys just took over.

:D Yo Meow:

Well, if you dig MD, then do it.

It's still old technology--nice technology and it does produce a good recording. However, it does not quite make it to CD quality, no matter what box you use.

I hate pushing a bunch of buttons to merely add an effect or EQ--but that's the way currect SIAB's are built. Someday, someone, somewhere, somehow, will get the idea that a EASY TO USE DIGITAL recorder can be made and made to sell at a couple of grand. Like, voice recognition--"Hello, recorder....turn on tracks 3 and 4 and 5, add reverb to track 3 only, my choice of reverb would be 'stage' reverb, etc."

Now, Yamaha and Korg and Roland engineers, get your heads out of the sands of confusing technology and market some EASY TO USE HIGH QUALITY BOXES.

Md

yeah, your most likely correct (yes you are correct)...
MD isn't Pro Tools, but it's easy.

I'd like to have the same ease of use with 64 tracks and mixdown/mastering
effects with the porta-studio feel.

maybe old habit, but it feels really strange to have a guitar in one hand
and the other on a mouse. i'm old timing it.

ADAT's with a mixer were pretty user friendly, but then you have to have
the board. I can't say personally my setup sounded better on ADAT than the MD tho...but thats my setup.

someday, i'll give in to a pc...but do they have to have such "busy" screens?
and reading the computer forum...a lot of problems to be had in the pc world.

back to the original question tho..MD4 would be better than a cassette, and if you don't mind bouncing tracks, could do the same as an 8 track.

in the end it all comes down to L/R stereo. (unless...you want surround..it never ends!) :)

Yo green hornet - long time no see!

I have to ditto what the green man said - I loved my MD8, and I never thought I'd say this - minidisc is old school, and sony screwed the format over by not allowing it to be as versitile as it could have been.
Hard disk recorders or audio interfaces are the way to go.

MD8 old school???

so what did you upgrade to from the MD8?

I mean HD porta-studios...or computer based sht?

fhkng roland 840 I had sucked..was hard to run..sound was great.

I tried a USB M-Audio something last few weeks ago,
it was alright but I never had a chance to record and burn a cd.

It might have had a chance....but all I hear is lock-ups, have to have a solo-PC not shared for anything else...yadayada

so fhk..it's like replacing my 14yr old TV, until it goes out it's hard to justify replacing.

That Yamaha 16track with CD burner at GC looked good and porta-studio?

KNow anyone that has that setup?

we use an echo mona audio interface now hooked in to the computadora.
