I've been wantign to get this head for some time, and i know it wont sound as good as the JCM's, but thats not a huge thing to me right now. I have a Line 6 head currently, but it doesnt have a whole lot of room for creativity(no FX loop..etc) . I need a head with some good tone/crunch sound to it, similar to the line 6's but a bit better(if possible). This things price and rating on musicians friend(and of course name) caught my eye. So would u say for a more alternative/punkier tone that the AVT would suffice?

ALso, any other head recomendations would be appreciated (in the $400-$600 range)

I have the 50 watt AVT combo. I like it. The gain cranked up on the clean channel gives a nice punchy sound, good for blues or chunky powerchords. You'll have people come in and say solid state amps are for the most part are pieces of shit (*cough*JonnyC*cough* :D ) but it seems like you know what to expect from it.

Hmm thanks man for the input, im just (hopefully) getting the head. I know solid state gets a bad rap, but i think there are some fairly decent solid states. THe marshall MG series, and the Crate amps...yeah they arent the best, personally(MG isnt so bad, but when it comes to crate distortion i just hate it..). But thanks dude...hopefully more people will reply. I dont wanna play 450 bucks on something thats crap, u know?

Yeah for sure man, it's alot of money. I'm a student so anything I buy is well thought out! I do like my solid state too, it's fine for what I use it for. I have a couple of boss pedals in front of mne to vary the distrortion a bit.

Have you tried it out or have you any other amps in mind?

Haha....some are, i'll agree with jonnyc...but i like a few. I mean, i was thinking about buying a tube amp on ebay, but then shipping comes to mind, at its a lil out of my range(800-1,000)...well more than a lil haha. But idk, i mean i love marshalls, i really do..i was thinking abotu them or a vox(valvetronix)...cause i tried one of those last time i went to guitar center and enjoyed it a lot. Im still bouncing around a few things..but im really leaning toward the AVT.

I'd rather see you get one of those B52's over that Marshall. I used to have an avt50 combo and while it was probably the best SS amp I've owned, it doesn't hold a candle to even the cheapest tube amps I've worked with(even the B52). Now I'm not saying the Marshall isn't useable, it is, and it's clean is fantastic, but it doesn't have that tube bite when you use distortion.

You might be better off going for the AVT combo. From what I can tell, the sound ain't too bad. I have 150 head, and I'm not immensly keen on the distortion. It's got plenty of balls, just isn't quite as punchy as I'd like. I still prefer the original valvestates. Had a much more natural, and, dare I say it, tubey sound, than the newer verions. Might be worth checking ebay to see if you can get one of the earlier heads or combos, if you ain't so worried aobut effects, I also have a Valvestate 8080 combo from years ago that sounds beautiful. As far as clean tones and effects go though, the AVT ain't bad at all for the money.

That said, I just bought a 6505 so...well...I'm pretty happy :D :p
