Hey guys, I'm planning on buying a Marshall cabinet for my Mesa dual rectifier head. Since I'll use it only for home-recording purposes I doubt I'll need a 1960 (4x12) cabinet.. I think I'll go for the 1936 (2x12) or the 1912 (1x12). It would be cool if you help me out a bit on this choice..

Is there a difference in sound between the 1960 and 1936/1912, except the volume?

Is the 1912 loud enough to get a great sound?

Which one would you choose? Or is there another cab you'd recommend?

Thanx!

its makes a Big Difference!!!

I have been researching speaker cabs myself and will be posting athread about this in just a few minutes to keep the topics seperated.

The Biggest Thing to do wiht the sound of a guitar cabinet is the type of speaker used. The lower priced Marshall 4x12 uses G12t-75W speakers. Then the price goes up to almost $1000 depending on what kinds of speakers you will be using.

Check out www.avatarspeakers.com - They sell custom made cabinets using genuine celestion speakers and for less than a new marshall cab, and you can get it open/closed back, and your choice of tolex covering/grill cloth covering. Check out celestions website for sound clips of the different speakers and a selection guide. http://professional.celestion.com/products/tone/index.html

truth be told there will probally not be much difference between the cabs big name guitars amp companies sell, except for what they put inside of them and Marshall and Mesa utilize Celestions..........

good luck!!!

Yup the speakers make a big difference!I like the vintage 30's myself and I hate the 75's and the greenbacks{25's} bust up a little too quick for me..this is all a matter of taste though so YMMV..anyways the 1936 is the way to go for a Marshall 2/12..the 1912 doesn't seem to have enough resonace to me theres zero "knock" in the 1912..I had that setup..Dual Rec head w/ 1936 you could do much worse!Good luck :)

Also I had a 1961 Fender Bassman Head and cab{2/12}..the speaks were toast so I put the vintage 30's in it..I recorded alot with that cab and a Mesa Mark 111..See if you can get hold of a Bassman 2/12 cab.. they really work better than the Marshall to me..slightly deeper box

Thanx.. But what could you say about the difference between the 1960 and 1936?

I live in Europe.. So I have to go for the Marshall.

Difference between 4x12 and 2x12? Could anyone help me out on this?

thedifference

the difference between a 2x12 and 4x12 is simpe - a 4x12 is twice as big and has twice as many speakers. And its all about the speakers anyway isn't it?

a cabinet twice is big will have twice as big of a resonance chamber and so it will have a different resonance frequency, so it will sound different, but if your gonna close mic a speaker you probably won't be able to tell.

a cabinet with twice the speakers will be 3db louder. Also the extra speakers can give you some different wiring and impedance options. And it would be able to handle more power because it has twice as many speaker to spread out the power distribution.

I think thats all I can think of right now............. There is a difference but will it be noticable is the real question?

Okay thanx man, looks like I should go for the 2x12 cause I'll use close-miking..
