Road
Not the title I would prefer but beggars have to accept etc.
Another work in progress.
This one may take years to complete.
And so to not waste years on a bad mix, I offer this preview to all of you for mix comments.
First - is the vocal too loud? Vocal - are they understandable?
Second - does vocal sound over processed?
Guitar is intended to be dark.
Cymbals have a bit too much noise I think - what say you?
Is the bass sitting well.
Drums - well they're hitting right?

Ok thanks

First - is the vocal too loud?
No, it could come up a db or so.
Vocal - are they understandable?
No, some of the lyrics are very soft and I could not understand them. When I have this problem, I either manually do volume automation on the vocal track, or do it with Melodyne if the vocal needs other processing.
Second - does vocal sound over processed?
Not really.

Hard to say on the other items, since I don't know the sound you are shooting for.

I don't know if the vocal is too loud. The keyboard part is occupying a lot of its frequency range and it's competing with it. And I don't think the vocal sounds over processed. I mostly don't like the keyboard sound and it doesn't sit well with the vocal.

bass level is OK to me.

Cymbals sound midi. But I don't think have any "noise" besides cymbal-noise. They sound like midi cymbals.

Hi RD Smith.
Vocals up a bit. Hmm are you listening to a mono mix?

I ask because I exported this track to my Tascam DP-24SD.

It was in mono on my first listen and yes the vocal was hard to hear, but better after adjusting the panning to stereo.

Vocals hard to hear - well yes if they need to come up a bit.

Thanks for the feedback.

Hi TripleM.

Thanks for pointing to the keyboard part.

Are you referring to the piano or the organ?

Yes cymbals are some kind of a synth creation, or a 808 whatever that is.

Thanks for the feedback.

Why? It sounds really close to done.

If you tweak the vocal, tweak it down a dB.

Understandable, yes.

Second - does vocal sound over processed?

No.

Guitar is intended to be dark.

It's great.

Cymbals have a bit too much noise I think - what say you?

They're fine.
Is the bass sitting well.

Yup. I'm listening on an effing ipad, and the bass is fine.

Look, I understand that you're obsessing over the mix - that's your job, and that happens. But this tune is one of the best you've done. I really like your usual lofi approach, but this is pop craft with a sure hand and a light touch. When I buy the CD, I want you to sign it, okay?

I've gotten to a point where I need to contemplate the next move.

I migrated to a new PC.

I've not gotten it quite worked in yet.

I need a new interface and a monitor switching gizmo.

Thanks dobro - appreciate the encouragement.

Late, I like the level of the vocals, the melody part(s) should notch down a bit, drums seemed OK, even the lead part sounded at the right level, just the basic melody part.

I didn't hear anything other than some track volume levels.

A year ago, I switched softwares and recording approach and camera and more. I haven't put anything out for over a year because I'm slow to get on top of new tech. It's a pain in the hole. Take your time.

Thanks DM60.
I’ve only heard this one through headphones and I’m not really happy with the levels.
Getting burned out on it actually.

I was listening with earbuds on my laptop. I don't know if it was mono, shouldn't have been unless the recording was. If you put up a revised version I will give it another listen.

Listened on the big speakers. Vocal @ 1.18 and onward needs to be more distinct, upfront, separate, I think. It's getting lost a bit.

Thanks dobro. I got my speaker going. I took a lot of the keyboard notes out. I think that makes some space for the vocal.

I’m going to post a revision soon I hope. Thanks RDSmith.

As a song, I like the happy waltzy piano intro and then incorporation into the song as it progresses. Then guitar minor, almost dissonance, breaks the piano intro as a surprise. And vocals are done well with a good voice tone and melody.

The first staccato guitar lead run at about :55 sounds a little too direct and in your face. The other similar runs blend better.

First - is the vocal too loud? Vocal - are they understandable?
Sometimes - reminds me of Donald Fagen - needs space but I don’t think volume.

Second - does vocal sound over processed?
No - sounds kind of dry actually.

Guitar is intended to be dark.
You are on to something with the Guitars IMO - really neat sounds.
Cymbals have a bit too much noise I think - what say you?
Drums, Cymbals aren’t working for me in there present form.

Is the bass sitting well.
Bass? Up a few DB - and with it’s own space.

Drums - well they're hitting right?
Yes - but they are very stiff - which might be what you are going for - so what are you going for?

Hey Papanate I do appreciate the sweet critique.

Vocals. is my bad. I, as a delicate artiste must be dynamic you see. So I leave it up to the mastering to make it audible. LOL - will address.

Dry vox it is then.

Guitar - thanks. Me feigning the greats.

Cymbals as a sound do lack emotion. When I wake up, I plan to smash some real ones.

Bass. Yes, the dark beast we all love. Too much and she gets pregnant. Too little and she walks away. Need the Goldilocks solution.

Drums. Yes, again, the listless beater who counts his coin by the hit of the high hat.
I'm going for precision with a touch of soul.

Thanks @Papanate .
