There are ways out. Dre waited until his contract was up and decided not to reup (I believe). Snoop waited until Suge was in jail and couldn't do much to him (leaving the door wide open for Master P). They just knew the diss songs were coming for leaving D.R.

I think these days, you can't be a good CEO unless you're really looking out for your artists...take care of them and they'll take care of you. Case in point, look at Dre. Dre started Aftermath from Interscope. Dre signs Em to Aftermath and then gave him some knowledge about the game.

Em forms Shady Records after his contract is up, but Shady is created as a subordinate of Aftermath. Dre and Em then take on 50 and then G-Unit comes around before the second album is out.

Now G-Unit is a subordinate of Aftermath/Shady/Interscope and 50 used Dre and Em as mentors of how to do business. Now you see G-Unit coming up with Mobb Deep and I think Mase is going to go over there too.

Now it's time to see who will have the new label out of G-Unit (besides Game since he's not there anymore) or does it stop there?

Great post Fiev....

I guess I'm speaking in terms of the type of people that frequent the forum. How to deal with it, when you're a small fry...

Again.. That's a well written post...

Thanks,
Joshua

Same thing applies....take care of your artists because you never know when they might be able to take care of you.

I don't mind taking someone under my wing that I might like as an MC and then teaching them some things about being a producer, web designer, manager, whatever skills I can bring to the table. If they're real folks they'll watch your back and hook you up when they can...like help you sell beats, get you part of their deal if they land one...anything can happen.

Above all else, just be real about yourself...shouldn't be a problem for you though.

Fiev.

Edit: When you're small, it takes a lot of networking to get word spread about you...best way I've seen to do that is to get a dedicated team together and let your product speak for itself.

Three words here....Hustle, Loyalty, Respect.

Damn.. You're kicking knowledge for real.. I totally agree with every word...

If you're dealing with a Suge, you might be dealing with the wrong kinds of folks. Suge ran Death Row Records by fear. Why did people stay so long? It's a two parter....the money was good for the time being and they were afraid of the man who could easily kill them and more than likely get away with it.

It's almost like being in the Mafia. You make wrong choices and piss the Don off, best believe you're getting what's coming to you (ok maybe I've been playing too much GTA as of late, but the same thing fits).

So what do you do when you're in that situo? You play your cards right and be aware of each and every opportunity to get out of it and still hold your own. Leave on good terms if you can and just remember that money's not everything...it can be nice, but if you're only playing the role of the puppet and your pockets still stay thin when you do most of the work, that's called getting screwed. From the sounds of it, it seems like you might be regretting the decision that you made recently. Hopefully that's not the case and all's good in your world homie.

I've been in situations where I've been offered deals for my services. A few years ago, I had a friend who tried to hook me up with a new studio in Manhattan that his friend was going to own (never heard about it). The guy offers me 50k to start, but turned the deal down when I started asking about royalties, moving costs, and keeping beats I already made as my own. They wanted EVERYTHING and was only willing to give me 20% of the cut of beats I made 100% (and this is with underground cats who might or might not sell). I know 50k can keep you living half-ass in Manhattan, but in the end I know if I took that deal, I'd get screwed

You have to know what questions to ask and how to avoid getting screwed (as best as you can) and not just jump for something because the shit sounds good.

You're young and you make mistakes. Shit happens, you just learn from it. If you let too many folks have too much info on you, it can be used against you. Knowledge is power yet some of it leaks out too much.

Question for you, have you signed any paperwork yet? If you have there's probably not much that can be done unless you have a damn good way out of it. If the dude is established, he probably has legal advice available to him. Tell me he doesn't know where you live or how to find you on the net. If not, then you could just disappear.

Actually Dre left Death Row without nothing..he gave up his halk of the label to Suge and left..(it was said the Suge would have owed him 50 Million for his cut) he just wanted out of the whole thing and he got out without getting anything in return..but his life and well being
