Making your own "sub-kick"...what speaker to use?

I tried using the search but after mowing through several pages, I gave up. I found a way to actually make it once you have the speaker. However, my question is, is there a speaker size/type/brand that is most suitable for this type of conversion? I'm sure I could build it for A LOT cheaper than that Sub-Kick that Yamaha is selling.
 
You want a smaller (8 inch) speaker that moves easily.
 
walmart lightning audio 10" is cool as well as the yamaha ns 10 or the tannoy 8"
 
Yes and no. You want one that is smaller than 10 inches because a bigger one will be harder to move. You want one the is easy to move, so you get a good level out of it.

Having a giant stiff speaker will give you more lower mids than subs than a smaller more pliable one.

The brand doesn't matter, how it reacts does.

That's really great info. And I really appreciate. But I don't know what brands are more pliable than others. :rolleyes: Sorry, I just don't have a lot of experience in knowing what speakers move more easily than others.

You would have to go and touch them. The ones with the larger excursion (the ones you want) will tend to have a softer surround. (the thing that attaches the cone to the frame.
 
I'm just speaking from experience, that's what we used in the past (all three with custom built pres, they may skew my opinions)
 
I made mine from an 8" Radio Shack woofer (standard) and it kicks serious boo-tay!! I just blend it in a bit with my main kick mic. Not too much, though. Too heavy and the subwoofer in my car can't handle the lows.
 
For the record, I've got a 12" that I scored out of a Peavey Bandit 112 and it works fine. Moves just fine and gives me a pretty sweet result. Watch out for phase though. I usually have to shift the region a bit to line it up with an internal mic.

you're probably using a scorpion??? I tried using a Black Widow & it worked but I felt it wasn't as sub as it could have been. I'm gonna have to get a smaller softer coned speaker. I happen to have some doing nothing
 
Any of you have a good 8" or 10" speaker they would be willing to part with that moves pretty easily?
