Making guitar cables

I usually buy my guitar cables, but recently decided to go back to making them. The shielded cable I get here in Japan to make cables with has two pairs of wires in the core (a total of four wires). I vaguely remember a friend making a bunch of cables a few years ago with same cable several years ago and it seems that he either used only one of the pairs in the core, or else grounded one one only one side.

Should I strip all four of the core wires, twist and solder them together? Just use one pair? Any advice?

Yeah, you're only gonna need 2 wires with an instrament cable (3 if it's stereo). I'd probably either do what you mentioned; strip 'em all combine them into two pairs.

Quick question though, are the two separate coax wires twisted as they go down the cable or are they just kinda straight from one end to the other? If they're twisted around each other, go with the method you mentioned before (you'll get signal cancellation to null out any unwanted interference), if not, you might want to consider using the two inner wires (the most shielded ones), as this might help fight the interference a little better.

For a guitar cable you need cable with 1 wire and a shield. The shield attaches to the sleeve the wire attaches to the tip.

wow. an old thread, but useful!

so, there really is only one type of cable that is specifically made to use for musical instrument cables? i thought so....

I hope i can find a store that sells cable and ends in Phoenix. the so called 'lifetime warranty' cables are marginal at best.

Guitar center does to large cities what Walmart does to small towns. all the competition is eliminated, along with the quality and brain capacity of the alledged customer service folks.
