Makeshift pop filter

I've sellotaped a piece of kitchen paper (towel) to a bent wire coat hanger to try and make a pop filter. Is this likely to be any good, or is there some other household material that might be better?

The towel will decrease the highs dramatically. A better solution would be a grease spatter screen, made of fine wire mesh, if you're not willing to go the whole embroidery hoop and pantyhose bit.

If you've got some lying around try using
some pantyhose or sheer stockings.

I went to a craft store and brought one of those
circles that people use for needlepoint.
Strech some pantyhose in it, and viola! just like the
real thing.

...yes I am male
...NO they are not MY pantyhose.

I have one funny story (at least for me) about when I made my own pop filter.

I asked my former girlfriend for some stockings. Took steel wire and made a loop. (about 5-6 inch, diam)
Attached the stockings to the loop and started to use it.

Holy shit!! What a smell.
She had perfumed them so they shouldn't smell sweat.
But it was impossible to stand infront of it.

I bought a real pop filter the next day.

(It wasn't wery nice looking either but I think they should have worked)

Here's a picture of one that I made quite a while ago, it's the embroidery hoop/panty hose thing...Just wanted to add that to attach it to a mic stand, I used a flexible piece of metal pipe stuff (i forget the real name of it) and a clamp, which I got at the hardware store for like $1 a piece...just flatten both ends, drill some holes in the ends, bolt one end to the clamp, and the other end to the hoop...Mine's starting to look like hell, but it still works good

How much is a needle point hoop, how much is a pair of panty hose(assuming you don't have any lying around)? My guess is your into this thing for at least 10 bucks. And, you'll still need the 'goose neck and clamp!' Why not just go out and buy the real thing? I bought one just the other day for 25 dollars,,,(goose-neck and clamp included) my guess is you could find one even cheaper, and then you've added a fairly nice piece of equipment to your arsenal that will do much better than some lashed-up, thrown together, make-shift imitation.

Actually a whole bunch less. Figure on 25 to 50 cents for an embroidery hoop at a garage sale or flea market, and a buck or so for new panty hose. Use one of those $3 squeeze mic clips from Radio Shack to hold it in place.

I usually use my wifes used pantyhose...the aeroma is inspiration when cutting a vocal (and if you heard my singing you'd know I need all the help I can get)....
