I know that being an independent artist is pretty difficult. You need lots and lots of promotions.. I was thinking of getting into the video productions, to produce my own music video.. Can anyone gimme any site similar to this site with bulettin board (forum) on where to get info regarding with video camera equipments.. :) Thanks :)

Hey geeq,

b4 you get to deep into this make sure you'll be able to get it on the air........ Made a very costly mistake....... You'll need another 20g's to get onto MTV's playlist

I'm afraid I have to agree with gec. If you don't have a decent single yet with some airplay, this is going to be a costly joke. The truth is hard: no matter how good it will be, nobody will play it.

well, i luv to play around with videos and stuffs.. i mean i can do some basic editing, special fx, and stuffs.. was planning to get into video productions.. even if it doesn't get airplay, wanna include one in the album as "enchance cd" :) just wanna know any decent sites that sells video cameras.. the professional ones though.. and how much do they cost?

http://bhphotovideo.com . A bit expensive, but excellent customer service.

For better prices, you can't beat Ebay.

Take a look at the Canon XL1, the Sony PD150, and the JVC GY-DV300U. All will run you around $2500 on Ebay, much more new. These are all pretty top of the line digital cameras. Don't forget that you're also going to need a kick-ass pc to do the editing on, as well as some expensive software (Adobe Premiere & After Effects (my preference), plus any plug-ins).

Good luck!

Check your local High School or University!

Bet if you look you'll find a bunch of film/TV geeks who would love to take on something like this as a class project....

how about those video cameras that are used in today's music videos? Like those high-quality ones? Where can I get an info regarding those equipments? :)

First of all they dont use video camera's to shoot videos. They use film. Usually 35mm or Super 16. A cheap 16mm camera can be had for less then a grand. A 35mm will run you about $10k+ The real cost is in processing and transfer to video. They will give you a Betacam SP copy and you will need a Betacam SP deck if you want to transfer that to your computer. A used Betacam SP deck will run you around $5-10K.

If you just want to play around get a Mini DV format camera. Sony and Cannon make some nice ones. That is the best video quality you can get for under $20,000. The next step up is Betacam SP which runs $20k+.

Do a search on google for video production and you will probably find a lot of stuff.

texroadkill, sounds like you've done some research, have you done any of your own stuff? If so what do you use?

I used to do a lot of low budget film projects with friends and then started working on big budget films, commercials and TV movies. Trying to do any kind of high quality video or film work is very expensive.

One of my friends used to do a lot of 16mm music videos and even though he got all the equipment for free from school he still would end up dropping around 2-3 grand per video in material and processing costs.

Mini DV is a huge technical advance for home video. I dont recall the actual specs but it compare very closely with BetaSP which is the industry standard for remote video shoots. The closes thing to that before was SVHS and MiniDV blows it away.

But all video formats look like crap (think soap operas and local news) compared to 35mm film. That is what most big budget productions are shot on. Of course Lucas has just developed better digital video cameras and there is 70mm and Imax but 35mm is still the standard.

If I wanted to do a video, it would prob. be for my own personal use and the other people involved. I may use it for a demo or somethin' who knows. Digital stuff is really starting to fall in price compared to when even I started buying it..... How much do you think just to do a video? not high quality just a video.

Getting the equipment is the hard part. Like anything else, how much do you want to spend? A prosumer quality Mini DVD camera is around $1500 - $2000 but you can get lesser quality cams for less. The main difference will be in the lenses and features. A prosumer cam will have a real lense and allow you to change them out with a regular camera lese mount as well as more manual exposure controls. The cheaper ones will have a small camcorder lense with lesser quality and options.

All you need is a camera and a way to edit the footage. If you want to edit on your computer than you need a way to digitize and the software to do it. Some camera's have Firewire ports but for most you will need a video card with SVHS or RCA in/out. The ATI all in wonder is a popular home video maker card.

I have done video projects with a crappy VHS camera and 2 vcrs. They generally came out pretty crappy but the cost was minimal.

Doing lip sync videos is pretty hard and requires either SMPTE coded video or very carefull editing.
