I have used the Mackie boards but have never had the budget for a good Soundcraft. I am now looking at a Soundcraft Spirit 16 channel. 650.00 I hope it's worth it.

Mackie D8B!!

:DI have a mackie D8B Digital mixer on version 5.1 software its well good it has its own cpu!!! lol Not tried or heard a soundcraft console though (would like to though so i could compare).

If I had to lose one board, it would be the Mackie 1402, over my older Soundcraft (can't recall the model.) Channel strips, less automated build, etc. causes me to believe it is a more robust, reliable board. I admit, this is something of an apples/oranges comparison, tho...

I would take my homemade passive mixer with decent pre over any of the gear being mentioned here. I honestly think it's drastically better - absolutely pure sound.

If you used a Seventh Circle Neve clone you could get a mixer going for around a grand. How could you possibly compare a Mackie to that?

depends but to be honest i would recommend behringer for live sound...

I have used my Behringer mixer for so many years, in home studio's and many live gigs... The routing on it is second to none and an improvement on the routing I used on the Mackie mixer this model is ripping off (2442fx)... I think it cost me £160 for 10 mic preamps and great features, even the built in fx are very usable... I know know you are all thinking (what a moron), and yes I have used other mixers and I know the preamps aren't that great but they have really surprised me sometimes when I hear a lush sound of a very intricate instrument coming out of the speakers and I look up to see my lovely Behringer mixer with my Behringer xm8500 mics pluggged in!! lol

It has paid for itself 10 times over with the amount of work I suddenly got owning a mixer. Mackie mixers are very expensive and so are soundcraft and soundcraft mixer are a bit lame, I used a massive one for a while at a venue I worked in and hated it, I much proffered the Allen and Heath one they had before that..

Behringer have recently upgraded there mixer range from the IMP pre's to Xenyx which have nicer preamps, very low noise...

Save your money and get something great for cheap it will serve you well and unless the rest of your signal chain is of the highest quality it won't take anything away from your sound...

Just my 2 pencs please don't shoot me...

man my mackie vlz seems to be good for the price, just stay away from behringer, their mixer preamps are the worst I've ever had to use. Some behringer stuff may be ok or even good, but their lower end mixers I can confidently say suck some major league ass.

I don't agree but that is what this is all about... They would suck ass if they were the worst sounding mixer and more expensive. But they are cheap as chips and no way the worst mixer or preamp I have used.. not saying your wrong I'm sure compared to what our used to their preamps are the worst but as I said it depends on the rest of your signal chain..
:D

Just my 2 cents (I realize this is an old thread):
I've owned two different Behringer boards over the years. One was a 16x4 and the other the MX9000. The 16x4 (don't remember the model) I bought brand new in '02. By the end of '02 it had one burned out mike preamp. I was always very kind to it. So I got the MX9000 used. I bought the PS new for it since it didn't have one. Anyways, I had it loaded up with 12 channels and it died on me. Turns out Behringer designed their +/-18v op amp rails for 3A each... well the MX9000 uses 3.5A per side... This unfortunately burned out 9 channels. I put in larger voltage regulators (which was the limiting part) and the board works minus those 9 channels. I got rid of that board also.

I own both a 1202VLZ Pro and a 1604VLZ Pro. They're ok. The pres have ALOT more headroom than the Behringer mixers, the 16x4 being the worst I've ever used. The 1604 had decent routing, but only 8 direct outs, which kind of limits the mixer, IMO.

I'm looking to upgrade from the 1604 to something much bigger with at least 16 direct outs.
