I was wondering what would be a better buy: a mackie 1202 vlz for $250 or an art tube mp for $60... strictly speaking of the preamp, which is better for what kind of sounds? I'm going to be using it for hip hop vocals, not singing, with a shure 58.. i don't really need a mixer, but i wouldn't mind one if the mackie preamp is significantly better than the art.
thanks

You will get more pre-amps with the Mackie, but, the ART will kick it's butt in about 99% of the amplications you will use it for. If you don't NEED a mixer, and only a pre-amp, well, I can't think of a better pre-amp in the price range.

Good luck

Just like to add my opinion. I thought the ART preamp adds a lot of warmth to the signal while the Mackie gives a nice cleaner sound. It depends on what is needed.
