Hey So I got my mackie mixer set up and tested everything... everything is fine now

Except I still have one more gripe... when I am recording with it the volume it outputs is very low... I mean no biggie right? Just turn the volume/gain up right? Well actually when I finally turn it up where its audible on my computer i can hear noise...

Mics used so far... shure sm57, studio projects b1...

Is there anyway to boost the signal more and keep the noise low?

Mackie makes the best manuals in the industry. Read the manual and make sure you have it setup properly. Check out gain staging in particular. The mackie should put out more gain then you know what to do with.

Actually I find myself needing to turn the trim all the way just to get some decent levels... :(

Well What i am doing now is just setting it at normal settings on the mixer, once it outputs to the PC i just boost the dB by 6 so I can hear it more... and keep noise pretty low

Either you have a bad mic cable, you haven't set the gain structure properly - or don't have something assigned right (hint:read the dang manual, even if you think you already know it all), or the mixer's broken. One other possibility would be how you've connected the mixer's output - are you getting a good reading on the LED meters?

Ok well here is the problem because I was pretty sure It wasn't my mics or cables or anything... its the mixer, whether settings or the unit itself...

Here is how i know for sure...

I played something on my computer a simple drumbeat I made...
And I set my mixer to mix what i'm hearing into the main mix and I used cooledit to record the sound
Now when I am playing the levels on the mixer read -2dB
After I have recorded it, it reads -7dB and the sound quality is very "shitty" it lost a lot of tone, like it thinned out and now i am hearing hiss also.. If i turn it up more so I can reach -2dB like the original, the quality would be worse because of more hiss... You get what I am saying?

Yes I am a newbie at home recording but I have went through the manual to check my settings, Maybe I missed something its possible, but this shouldnt be should it?

This is straight from the computer to the mixer back to the computer, I mean it shouldn't be losing quality should it...

I am using a M-audio audiophile 2496 with Hosa RCA jacks for input/output to the mixer... Could it be the jacks?

First you talk about mics then you talk about looping a track from the computer through the mixer. If you want us to help troubleshoot you have to be VERY specific as to the exact path. In your description above you don't say what device the meter readings are from. You also don't say what inputs/outputs you are using or what the mixer levels are set to.
