Damn, these monitors look nice. Still yet to test it out, anybody here that has used or own a pair?

We've had a pair for about a month now. We absolutely f'in love them. We went from a pair of Tannoy 6.5 monitors (not amazing by any means, but commonly used as near fields) and have been blown away by the differences.

In comparison, it seems as though with the Tannoys we would give, for instance, 2 or 3 dB at 5k to a certain track and it would sound "better" and we'd move on. With the 824s, it seems obvious that we need 2.6 dB at 5068 Hz. They're EXTREMELY accurate. Gone are the days of a shrill top end to mixes.

Same goes for panning. Whereas previously we'd just shove something to, say, 3 o'clock, now we can accurately hear that whatever sound it is sounds best at exactly 2:35. Very precise.

Tracking, mixing, and mastering are all a pleasure on these monitors. Without exception, every mix done on these has transferred much, much better to the "client wow-er" speakers.

I guess you could say that I'm pretty happy with them.

Run, don't walk. Buy them.

Skye,

TRY before you buy................preferably in your own listening environment. The Mackies are nice monitors, but they have to be suitable for your room if you are going to get the "most" from them. I have heard the same pair of 824's in two different rooms............in one they were too bass heavy, in the other they were fine.............this is all to do with the rooms' acoustic properties, and is no fault of the monitors.

I would imagine Kendogs' room was near to a perfect match for his 824's...........not everyone is that lucky though.

I was at a friends studio who had them, and the control room was kinda on the large side....like 15 x 25...with the equipment setup along the short side...with a couch waaaay back against the back wall. And..they Mackies just seemed 'small' to me, and you had to be sitting right between them (these where about 6' apart...on an Argossy style console) to hear them AT ALL. You moved anywhere else, and they sounded 'tiny' to me. ...even standing behind the mixer position listening over their shoulder. In the "sweet spot" they seemed ok...but still 'tiny' to me.

Over the past 3 months I've listened to a lot of different monitors - mostly in the large speaker room at the our local Long & Mcquade music store in downtown Toronto.

Including the Mackie 824's....which I compared with several other sets - side by side, etc...using a number of different CD's...

Yeah, the Mackies look and sound good. The most *noticeable* stand out quality was their mid-range imaging/seperation. I could literally feel/hear the different positions of the instruments with ease.....and didn't have to search for it, like with other monitors.

However, I did suspect that the bottom/bass end to be somewhat coloured or exaggerated, although it was crisp & crunchy, not boomy - which I definitely do not like, or want...in a set of studio speakers...

IF you've got the bucks - I'd buy the Mackie 824's.

Kev,

I think you missed my point..............Mackies are great for you in your room.............. BUT NOT NECESSARILY RIGHT FOR OTHER PEOPLE............or their rooms. This is why it is so important for prospective buyers to try various gear out before they buy rather than being told to buy "Brand X" just because it is right for you. I could have said similar in regard to Tannoys but I'm well aware they wont suit everyone.

Ausrock - I think you may have confused me with "Kev", but maybe not.

In any case, you may be right about the Mackies not working in every room, as I only tried them in mine, but don't leave out the possible mitigating factor that they have many controls on the back panel to customize them to specific rooms to some extent.

I was quite surprised at mixmkr's comments about the Mackies, and I suspect that something was not set correctly on the set he listened to if they sounded small, or perhaps they were wired out of phase. I find the sweet spot on these to be significantly larger than all the other monitors I've tried.

As with just about everything, but more so with monitors, Ausrock's advice is dead on. Try before you buy. We did, and ended up falling in love with the Mackies.

Oh yeah.....

that goes without saying......ya always gotta DEMO any monitors "in YOUR room" before actually parting with some serious cash.....

All WE can do here is make suggestions/recommendations based upon our own experiences....but in the end, one has to obviously "listen" and make their own decisions on whats right or wrong for their music environment, etc.

Actually, IF you re-read my post above you will note that I haven't heard the M824's "IN MY ROOM" but in the L&M local store audio room, along with many other sets....

Personally, I think it's OK to say that a product "is" good - IF one truly feels that it is (and the general concensus on the web does seem to favor the Mackie's in that respect :-)....even IF obviously none of us know that it will suit EVERY kind of listening environment out there....

Otherwise, we'd never get to SAY anything - right?

Just MY 2 cents worth...

KEV

Ken,

I almost did confuse the two "K's"..............but decided to continue that post.

I did so, mainly because I feel that it would have been wiser to suggest "trying" the Mackies rather than the unequivocal directive to "buy" them. Unfortunately, newbies (I dislike that word), frequently take things very literally in their search for their next purchase.

14x20, dimensions of my room. Thanks for all the help and all, but for $1250 a monitor I dont think Im gonna go with these. I think I am going to go for the smaller model, the HR624s. I know they go for $950 a piece, but an extra $600 to spend is a bonus.

Ive yet to hear them, but Im heading into a location with L&M in a few weeks. So Ill be sure to listen to both, but from what I hear & what people tell me. In my case, the available space I have is on the dot for the HR624s. Plus, these'll be my very first pair of these monitors ever. Blah, Im going on into nothing.

Btw ausrock, watch your mouth. :)

Hey Bad Name,

When you are in the L&M store - do ya self a favour and check out the Yorkville YSM-1P's.......they are very good for $740 Cdn a pair.....

My home studio is 12 x 12...and they work really well...I was surprised at the performance and accurate response, etc...

so I bought a set :-)

Ask L&M if you can listen to the Mackies & YMS-1P's side by side.....I don't think your'll find that there's so much a difference to warrant the big price hike...

the reason for that most likely is I never really use nearfields that much. I have a pair or Urei 813 and a smaller pair of Jbl 4311's that are both apart by at least 10 feet. I find it hard to mix on nearfields, actually. My Auratones are the closest things to nearfields that I [sometimes but rarely] use, not to mention the ns10's I had for a BRIEF period of time. The Mackies sounded ok[at my friends studio]...but they seemed to lack the "oomph" that I like...that chest poundin' stuff. ...and yes...I watch the ears!!;)
