Mackie CR1604 VS Alesis Studio 12R

I'm new. A freind has a Mackie CR1604 for sale for 250, or the Alesis Studio 12R for 150 someplace else. I am just gettingg started, using an Alesis blackface. Which mixer might be the better choice??
I have no other equipment yet, just trying to build it up slowly until I have enough to start recording. Thanks for any advice.

When I branch out from my Roland workstation into Standalone HD units I am getting a Mackie board.

I'm not even going to mess with anything less.

The 12R is geared for small-venue, live work while the 1602 affords the user with adequate functionality, perf and quality suitable for home-rec'ding tasks. Though the 1602 is not equipped with pre's found on the standard VLZ models, out-put dbu sensitivity is much higher than the 12R's. Also, the 1602 provides better routing options, capable feq'y shelving and a much lower s/n ratio than the 12R.

I use the 12R for the pre-amps and like it okay. Don't expect anything great, but they are useable.

thanks for all the replies..Hopefully I can get the Mackie from him, seems the way to go. I guess the pres' in the Mackie are decent enough to use for now, barring a killer deal on a preamp- I will need mics too but everyting in good time.
