Mackie 24/8 Bruce?

I am recording a hardcore band that would like to have the toms and kick eq'din there headphone mix during recording but I don't want to eq to tape.Is there a way to use the mix b bus or any other way to accomplish this without eqing to tape?Also I found that when I miced the toms there was excessive crash leakage in the toms so when I eq'd the toms to sound metallic there was obvious high frequency distortion due to the cymbal leakage.Tonight I'm going to try to get better tom isolation but worst case scenario am I going to have to use a low pass filter on the toms to get rid of the cymbal leakage? From what I can tell the mackie doesn't have a low pass filter.If I can't use eq in the cans without it going to tape then I'm just going to tell them to deal with the headphone mix knowing we can use eq during mixdown.By the way I used sm57's for toms considering that's all I had.On my ensoniq dp 4 I think there is a low pass filter so would I just send the toms through the aux bus to get rid of the leakage?Thanks!!!
 
If you are using the Mackie pres to go to tape, once you engage the EQ in, it's in....

I hardly ever track thru the board, but in your situation, I would use one of the AUXs for headphone monitoring and run a graphic EQ thru the AUX sends/returns.... AUX 1 or 2 (or both) can be routed to headphones easily....

As long as the AUXs aren't being routed back to the buss outs, you'll be fine.

AS for mic'ing the toms.... the SM57s is a directional mic, so playing with the positioning of them should allow you to find a spot where there is minimal cymbal bleed.... and BTW, the SM57 works very well for toms!

Thanks for the reply, I ended up using a low pass filter on the toms which definately cut out the excess cymbal leakage via Aux. bus. I miced the cymbals with overheads and that worked extremely well.As far as the headphone mix I just told them to deal with it and we can apply eq later during mixdown. Overall, the session worked well.And yes I agree sm57's do a fine job for the toms, 6 in my mic cabinet and definately room for more.Thanks again.:D
