Tell me everything you know about the Tascam MA-AD8!
Okay now that I've asked the broad question, let me narrow it down a little. I need to expand my MOTU 2408 MKII to be able to record 16 (and maybe down the road, if I need it, 24) tracks simultaneously. Since the MOTU has TDIF inputs I thought that the Tascam MA-AD8 might be a good way to facilitate this, but I have yet to hear anybody's opinion on that particular piece of equipment.
What I'm really after is this: are the A/D converters any good? How do they compare to the converters on the MOTU? I've considered buying the expansion that MOTU sells but it's twice as much and seems like a waste when I'm only using 8 of the 2408s inputs. Also, I'm currently using a Mackie 1402 VLZ for preamps and I'd like to know how the MA-AD8s preamps compare, not just in terms of "are they good", but do they color the sound in a way that makes them noticeable different from the Mackie preamps (these are not the new XDRs by the way, my board has whatever Mackie was using before those).
One last question: are there any other units I should look at to expand the MOTU? Any comments anyone has on this are welcome. By the way, Peter, if you read this, you posted a link to Auralex on one of the threads at Harmony Central- I checked it out and the Acoustics 101 pdf was extremely helpful, I've got a big book on acoustics that I've been working my way through and this will really help me sift through it, thanks man.
